From photographs and online videos of the DLR B23 Stock, I am really impressed! The teal poles and the new “Poplar” moquette look stunning and the interior just feels more akin to other TFL operated trains such as the Class 345s and Class 710s.

It will be interesting to compare how the CAF B23s will perform against the Tyne & Wear Stadler Class 555s? Seeing as they are broadly similar trains also operating on a light rail system.

The B23s have nothing to do with 555s and Tyne & Wear is not light rail.

Now the B23 is technically in service, I wonder how long it'll take for all the trains to come into service? I assume it'll be a one in, one out type situation as the B90s and B92s are taken out of service.
It will be a gradual introduction, I believe it's just one in service for this week then a couple more over the next month

Apart from being new 5 car EMUs… Of course it is, it was built using German Stadtbahn standards and the original trains were also based on German Stadtbahn B wagen

A new video shows a mix of text-to-speech announcements and pre-recorded ones (e.g. for interchanges at Canning Town, presumably with the intention eventually of also advertising “change here for City Hall”):

One presumes that they're still not satisfied yet with how the TTS sounds, or their supplier hasn't completed work on the custom voice, so they're sticking with the announcements in the can where they're still accurate.

Do we have a time frame for the complete withdrawal of the legacy stock?

That is Ivona Amy playing. She is one of the most common TTS voices on buses across the UK these days. I am sure many will also recognise her from GA and LNWR and WMR stations where she voices the station announcements.

Another video here where for example at 01:44 you can hear her for the Stratford interchanges:

The other video that you linked has the new Ivona Amy ones at 10:20 and 18:56 if anyone wants the timestamps.

This is so strange. Why would you keep the original lady for the main announcements and then use Ivona Amy instead of Emma Hignett for interchanges. It does not make much sense.

You could be right that maybe they are still testing the TTS and rolling it out slowly. But in that case surely they would be using Acapela Elloise instead for theses interchanges.

I know that the 2024 Stock is currently using Acapela Rachel whilst under test. But at least that makes more sense as the voice is from the same exact TTS supplier.

Edit: Spoke too soon....it's terminating at Canning Town.
Someone said it developed a fault although I have no idea if that's correct or what kind of a fault if it is correct; do we know if it's back out again today or not?

Edited to add:

Yes, 209 is out again on the Woolwich / Stratford run. I'm actually on the official launch run full of press...!!!

Yesterday was a low key preview and it was always planned to take it off early at Canning Town - no faults at all. ( Source: DLR Operations Director ).

The PSA on 209 yesterday afternoon from Woolwich to Stratford did say that it was a fault; obviously that's all I can go off of. The train was still advertised as going to Stratford and not a planned curtailment at Canning Town.

It was a emergency egress cover that got broken

Waited a ridiculously long time at Woolwich Arsenal, by the time it did eventually come I had to leave.

I feel like I must’ve just missed it when I entered the station. They are also doing like 1 minute turnarounds (is this usual?) which didnt help. I also don’t like the open door button

Been normal for a while, at least in the peak. Not sure if it came in with the frequency reduction or when they sliced down to 2 car service. Always thought it was a bit risky, little scope for service recovery.

Something I forgot to ask the train staff yesterday ... why the mix of 2 and 3 doorways on the different carriages?

Maybe its related to the carriages which have three doorways being trailers?

I have a video coming but it will take me a few days find the time to make it. In the meantime here are some photos...

That’s very interesting - is it really necessary? I spent a good amount of time there today and it isn’t like the trains were constantly buzzing in and out, there’s definitely space for more dwell. Looked like they were also only using one of the platforms for a large chunk of my time there which is strange for a service so intensive they can only have 1 minute dwell time.

I’ve been to the other termini on the DLR at off-peak times, and it tends to be a situation where one train comes in and the other platformed train leaves, and again. Today they just came in using the one platform and rushed off again.

little scope for service recovery.

I had actually thought there was some minor disruption today as two Bank trains left in a row. Might be that way in the peaks as you say

Not a fan of the long undivided sections of seat without armrests. Surely asking for passengers to invade each others' personal space.
While l sympathise, perhaps a recognition that some folk are getting larger?

A bit weird that. It's as if someone pinched the armrests there.

I went on it yesterday! Spent ages milling about Stratford International waiting for it to show up, but I got it! I loved it - it's a huge step change in quality for the DLR and takes the network from feeling like a fun novel rollercoaster (as I've seen it said online) to an actual, serious-feeling rail line. It's modern, and the internal displays on the sides of the carriages are used very usefully, providing info about the next station (what side of the train the doors open, interchanges, etc), compared to the 710 internal side displays, which just shows unhelpful info. The announcements were very loud, and so was the 'beep' before the doors close (not the hustle alarm, the long beeeeep). I hope they fix that, as it was almost too loud, even with AirPods in. The front seats seem like Elizabeth line seats, which is cool, but I'm not certain. Weirdly enough, the onboard maps/interchange info didn't show the new Overground names, and the PSA onboard did all the announcements manually for interchange stations (well, Stratford, West Ham, and Canning Town where I got off.) Maybe they're not done yet. They are really nice trains - very quiet internally, and has elements of TfL's new (I suppose not so new anymore) CMF design language, with brushed metal highlights and little hidden roundels. All in all, a long wait, but a worthwhile one. I look forward to the day they dominate.

Why couldn't they get the patterns on the moquette to line up properly, it shows a lack of attention to detail.

Or a due deference for reducing costs? How much fabric would be wasted for something utterly petty which virtually no one actually cares about?
