According to a photograph posted on the YouTube channel of the Danish videographer Kenny’s Film, last night Danish state railways DSB received the first 7 of 56 DB IC1 carriages which will replace IC3 DMU trains on the Copenhagen-Hamburg (and probably also but not Aarhus-Hamburg) lines from mid-April. They will be in service until such time as the delayed Talgo order for DSB arrives.

Mods: this could be a continuation of this closed thread.

Yes, one formation has been transferred to Copenhagen to be used for staff training.

Here is a video from the handover from Hectorrail to DSB in Padborg:

The capacity increase from even a double-IC3 set to a 7-car rake will be most welcome, although I’m going to miss those lovely IC3 armchairs.

Hope that does not cause an impass on the German IC network.
It shouldn't do as continuing deliveries of ICE3neo and ICE4 sets are releasing ICE1 sets (reformed as 9-car/refurbished as LDV sets) to replace loco hauled formations.

Will these services run as IC or EC?

As IC. Train compositions are partly already available on fernbahn.de. It seems that they'll be used from 11 April, e.g. IC 392-397.

In part because DSB don't have any infrastructure to provide (or, for that matter, any interest in) providing catering, which I think is a requirement of the EuroCity banner.

In fact because the DSB IC3 have vending machines, and the DB IC1 don't, it might actually be a step backwards in catering provision. Maybe trolley sales will be restored...?

ran the numbers on the seating capacity via vagonweb and got this
single IC3 - 16 first class and 122 second class (total 138)
dual IC3 - 32 first class and 244 second class (total 276)
triple IC3 - 48 first class and 366 second class (total 414)

new IC sets - 57 first class and 369 second class (total 423)

basicly running a triple set every journey now

Did the IC3 ever have vending machines, or is my mind fading? I can remember that the IR4 had them, although they were somewhat ‘temperamental’, but all I can remember on the IC3 once the trolleys had gone was a a Henry Ford coffee machine (Any variety you want, as long as it’s black). I thought that even those had been put out of use. My recollection is also that you didn’t get them on the trains to Germany in recent years, as you had a restaurant on the ferry. (I must admit that I had to stop my regular trips to Denmark a few years ago.)

DSB got their own vending machines for softdrinks and water for the IC3/IR4 fleet developed a few years back, because products got stuck in the old standard vending machines due to the vibrations and movement of the train. There is one in each trainset and they only accept payments by card: https://www.vagonweb.cz/fotogalerie/foto/201802/DSC_8394.jpg

The first class compartments typically have an insulated flask of coffee for self-service. There have been brief experiments with 7-Eleven franchisees providing roaming catering services (within Denmark only) on the IC/ICL lines, notably with an insulated backpack dispensing coffee.

Always been slightly hit and miss of Euro Cities actually provide catering - EC96/97 ‘Iris’ between Brussels and Chur for its later years of operation didn’t.

The experiment is more or less permanent now, but still there is no public schedule of which trains they service and also no public menu with prices. The franchisee is DSB themselves and DSB is also the biggest 7-Eleven franchisee in Denmark. That is also why the staff is wearing DSB branded clothing both in the stores and in the trains (DSB logo on the backpack).

Glad that the IC1 are not sent to scrap.
However, my concern is if there are any operators that may want to take on the coaches like RDC, Flixtrain, MÀV-Start, Leo Express etc

the Brenner EC from Munich to Italy lacks catering on the occasions I used it.

It used to have a restaurant car, but doesn’t anymore this year - they could not cope with the voltage spikes in Italy and were out of service half the time.

When the RJ2 enter service, there should be regular restaurant services again.

There are no overhead wires to Aarhus (yet), so the IC3's will continue for a year or two. But then there will be a gap of a few years before ETCS and overhead wires are ready for the Vectron+Talgo trains. In this period a change in Kolding will be necessary on the Aarhus-Hamburg route.

Also the IC1 will not be put into service from April 11th due to problems with the approval for the coaches in Denmark (surprise). New unofficial deadline is June 17th.

so will Aarhus-Hamburg be split at Federicia or will IC3's contine to Hamburg still?, wont IC3's no longer be allowed into Germany once they get ECTS as they will lose PZB during the refit?
with the IC1 sets at least could see a loco swap happening at Federicia but would need to hire in as DSB retired the ME's last year

not traveling again until july so fingers crossed new sets will be in service by then as assume DSB really dont want to miss the summer season that was the entire reason for hiring these in

From December 2023 or 2024 the Hamburg-Aarhus trains will be diverted to Hamburg-Copenhagen with connection to an InterCity service in Kolding (Kolding-Fredericia-Aarhus-Aalborg). DSB will under no circumstances rent ME's for passenger services after they have used so many resources to advertise that they have been withdrawn from service.

IC3's will also disappear from the Flensburg-Fredericia InterCitys, but I don't know if there is a temporary replacement found yet. The final replacement will either be German Stadler Flirt Akkus (BEMU's) (Flensburg-Tinglev) or new EMU's for RE7 Hamburg-Flensburg which will then be extended to Denmark from 2027.

yea i wasnt suggesting the ME's prob hire in whatever DB cargo use but if the route is getting split yea makes it easier

And I guess the split is temporary, electrification to Århus is planned to be complete 2026 and the Århus-Hamburg route should return at least a few years later when the Copenhagen-Hamburg trains are rerouted through the tunnel.

Kennys Film on YouTube has done a trip report to Hamburg on the IC3, and also comments on the coming DB IC carriages.

It's in Danish, but if you turn on subtitles, then click on the cogwheel in the bottom right-hand corner of the video player you can translate it from Danish to whatever language you prefer.

The approval of the coaches is now so close that DSB and DB have released all seats for booking from June 17th to July 22nd and from July 31st to November. The last week in July will be released next week and due to construction works the trains will only run between Hamburg and Fredericia and only with IC3 during that week.

On all trains with IC1 coaches DSB will sell coffee and snacks from "Kaffe Ekspressen" - the coffee will be served free of charge in 1st class.

DSB will also provide a bag with a 30cl bottle of water, crispbread, chocolate and a wet wipe for all passengers in 1st class.

The above mentioned services will only be offered when the trains are in Denmark (Padborg-Copenhagen). Deutsche Bahn will not provide anything between Padborg and Hamburg Hbf.

Please be aware that there will be no cold drinks offered for sale on the trains with IC1.

Yea available to book now

Thou im now screwed over by DB doing engineering on both routes into Amsterdam at the same time so now impossible to rebook for the route and now cant even use the ticket they sold me as for a train that won't run anymore but not told yet so can't convert to a flexible ticket and even then can't really take any other train as none will be running

When are you travelling and from where to Amsterdam? There are five routes from Germany into the Netherlands and can't imagine they're all blocked simultaneously.

On July 31st both the IC Berlin - Amsterdam and the ICE International run into the Netherlands normally.
There only are some ICEs diverted between Köln and Arnhem, resulting in them skipping Duisburg, Düsseldorf and Oberhausen.
