Division of work from BR to Privatisation.

Hi All, I was just having a ponder over how the division of work as well as staff occurred when privatisation came into force. Was it on a request basis or was it based on seniority? Perhaps it was something else like route/traction knowledge? Any info or anecdotes would be interesting to discover.

Depots had already been sectorised so each depot was “owned” by a particular sub-sector.

These sub-sectors formed the business units that were either bundled up for sale or just sold as individual TOCs. There was a disaggregation exercise done in 1993 to make sure all staff were going to be in the right business units/Railtrack/ROSCO etc for 1/4/94.

The staff didn’t have any real choice as to where they were allocated.

In Glasgow Control the existing staff were divided into the new Railtrack and Scotrail Controls. Some roles were ring-fenced, eg the Duty Managers went to Railtrack. My role however, Section Controllers, was divided between the two new set-ups and we were each asked which we wanted to go to. I chose Scotrail but ended up in Railtrack! I prefer to say that I was head-hunted by Railtrack rather than rejected by Scotrail..... I never regretted how things turned out, though.
