Distance from job application.

Hi everyone, I am new here so glad I found this forum its full of helpful people and information.

I am looking for some advice before I apply for a trainee driver position. I am 39, currently live and work in France (I am British) ideally I would like to remain in France and move back if/when I get a job offer.

Most TOCs state you must live within 60mins to apply for a job do you think if I explain in the cover letter I will relocate straight away if I was offered a position I would be considered?

I do have an address in the UK I use and will be at if I get interviews etc but that will probably be more than 60 mins away but might be better than a French address?

This will be a huge change for me and my family I know if I get interviews etc I may have to travel back and forth a bit, but I am prepared to do it and leave notice etc isn't a problem.

It’s a difficult one to answer definitively. You’d be best off calling the TOC or FOC direct and speaking to recruitment. I’d be inclined to give a U.K. address on any correspondence as I wouldn’t be surprised if your french one would be sifted out before they even look at a cover letter or application etc. Sorry I can’t be of more help, others may be more knowledgeable in this area.

I started driving last year and had the predicament of living elsewhere in the country (where the app specified you must live within 45 mins). I wrote a cover letter explaining this and that had an address can move to and was offered the job. May depend TOC to TOC (or FOC) but may be worth a call and cover letter

I told my TOC that I was planning to re-locate if I got the job, they were fine and I got the job. Just be honest and open with them, it happens all the time.

I've noticed that jobs on the FirstGroup website give a 'will relocate' option in the applications. Their recruitment team are pretty helpful as well from my experience

I know certain firms have clamped down on it due to trainee drivers "relocating" for a job with TOC X and then "relocating" straight back home again with TOC Y as soon as they've got their key. Personally I don't blame anyone for doing this but it explains why many TOCs will not consider relocations. Of course, some TOCs are so desperate they'll take anyone, and presumably must factor in that most relocations will probably leave within a few years.

If you speak fluent French and keep your nose clean for a few years you shouldn't have too much trouble getting on Eurostar if that's your bag.

Haven’t found any TOC/FOC that desperate but hope I come across one lol.

Good point I can understand that, I don't want to move back to the same place we used to live I want a change will make that clear. I currently have a commute of just over an hour so I know how important it is to be much closer than that.

My French is usable but not fluent.

I will sit do a lot of research prepare myself as best I can before applying for any positions. I have a lot to learn. This site will be a fantastic source of information to help me.
