Distance between Central line Gants hill and Newbury Park?

Have noticed that although driving distance up the A12 is fairly quick, it takes around 2 minutes to travel it by the underground itself?
Does the track go quite deep or does it go in a circle or something?

Distance between Gants Hill and Newbury Park stations according to my "Miles and Chains" book is 1 mile 38 chains. Looking at "Bakers Atlas", the track does noticably loop round to the south after leaving Gants Hill.
