Disruptive passengers - on a Monday morning?!

Just noticed that the 06:40 York - Plymouth is running about 40 late, having lost time between Tamworth and Birmingham (20 minutes) and then sitting at Bristol TM for 16 minutes.

According to the app, the reason was 'disruptive passengers' - what sort of scenarios can this delay reason cover? Surely people aren't coming to blows at 9am on a Monday morning?

On a sidenote, I noticed that coach G was locked out of use with yellow tape over the doors - I take it this was unrelated!

It may have been related to the overcrowding caused by having a carriage out of use?

It shouldn't be that overcrowded at that time - about 08:50 at Tamworth. And isn't that service booked for an HST on Mondays?

PS. Which app gave you an explanation for the delay. XC don't supply delay information anymore, do they? If so where? Be grateful to find that info on a regular basis. Cheers

It is, hence why there was a Coach G on the service. Even then, going from 6 to coaches to 5 standard surely wouldn't be that bad.

The app I was using was the CrossCountry app called 'Train Tickets'. It serves as a live departure board, and you can 'follow' the progress of any given service, see whether it had made up or lost time etc. It doesn't always have the delay information at the top, especially if it is a short delay, but in this case did. Normally it is "This train has been delayed due to signalling problems", which at the moment is quite a regular one if looking at services from Paddington ;)

Thanks for the App feedback. I rarely use the XC app so I must give it a second glance.. RTT, especially the web pages giving train progress are very useful, but only give reasons for cancellation, and not all the time.

I would have thought that a Monday morning would be pretty busy on that route. The central core of XC seems pretty busy at any time, and a Monday morning might see a mix of business and weekend travellers, though of course there was no info as to where the alleged disruption took place.

The HST I took recently from Newcastle on a Sunday morning was also full long before Birmingham. It seemed particularly busy between Leeds and Sheffield. I dread to think what it would have been like with a Voyager.

As someone who works shifts I would love to behave in the manner I am expected to tolerate at 10 o'clock on a Saturday night during the office hours commute. However a dispute over reserved seats can escalate, fare evasion, a domestic can occur at anytime.

I've witnessed this a few years ago at Reading during the morning peak- two middle aged businessmen in suits physically squabbling over a seat. I don't think I helped by telling them the childrens carriage was coach E :)

Disruptive passengers can occur at ANY time, trust me.

Early morning services get a fair few, generally with people who had gone out drinking. Its possible it could have also been a fare evader who was to be removed from the train - thats a common one.

I can definitely see how a dispute over seat reservations could have caused a problem!

Delays in double figures are in the group attributed to 'fleet' at New Street and 'staff' at Bristol. 3 mins at Exeter the only ones attributed to retail which would be passengers (and is said as such)

EDIT: delay codes clouded to avoid any bias claim

Quite possible that a passenger held the door open for someone else, which knackered the door, hence it being out of use.
I'd class that as 'disruptive'.

Hmmm - that doesn't sound so much like 40 minutes because of disruptive passengers then.

Fleet could be the coach which was locked out of use when I saw it.

Normally I'd agree with you - but this is slam door stuff we're talking about, unless of course it got caught on the catch which the passenger pulled at and damaged it or something.

It's just I'd normally think of sliding doors etc. when thinking about a passenger holding/forcing a door and as a result breaking it.

The earliest I've personally called the BTP to disruptive passengers is 0650 - but I'm sure there are many earlier than that. In my case it was a person harassing another passenger, and when challenged got abusive and couldn't provide a valid ticket.

Disruptive passengers - sometimes drug and alcohol related can happen anytime - not just on late evening trains.

"Train rage" gets worse as trains get ever busier (regrettably)

Bloody hell, obviously I've had very sheltered journeys  - the only thing I've ever seen was two youths scrapping on Chatelet-les-Halles station, but considering some of the areas the trains from that station serves, I think that is rather mellow!

If the passcom is operated, that is often classified as "disruptive passengers".

That's interesting to know - I suppose it's the most accurate category for it, but wouldn't have been the first thing I'd have thought of.

The guard came down and said any more and your off thankfully they got off at oxford would been a long night I feel if they went any further

I don't work in an area know for problems, and this was a quiet rural town - so these things really can happen anywhere at any time. I think that alcohol or drugs were likely a factor in this case.

First trains on Saturday morning can also have some interesting characters onboard too - I've had abuse off someone before because there was no trolley service on the train to provide coffee (there never is!). They were offered an alternative stop in the middle of nowhere and soon changed their attitude

You seem to forget that what is early, or even late morning, to us can be a late, or very late, night to others.
