When looking at the live train information for SWT, it showed this:

16:35 London Waterloo to Weymouth due 19:17
This train will be delayed and is expected to be 9 minutes late from Brockenhurst.
This is due to disruptive passengers.

What exactly do they mean? Can a train really be delayed FROM London due to disruptive passengers?

still have to wait for the BTP, Train crew could have been assaulted or another passenger, numerous reasons can come under that banner

We had same yesterday because an idiot dived in through the window when he was refused boarding after CDL locked at Liverpool St. We departed again 6m later after having him arrested.

Could also be pass comm activations, fight on board, drunk, police to a fare evader. Just really some box to tick to record a delay thats down to passengers who do not know how to conduct themselves properly in public.

The 16.35 down is due away from Brocky at 18.07 so the delayed message time is perfectly valid. So it does make sense - to me at least!

I agree that the time is valid, I was more wondering about what sort of disruption passengers could cause, but that's been well answered now :D

It must take a long time for the BTP to get to some of the smaller stations though, those far out that don't get service very often!

The locals would probably be called first. When I've held trains for the above reasons, it's nearly always been locals attending - only BTP if they were already at the station.

Dived through the window? That must've hurt!

Don't they normally say that the delay is due to emergency services dealing with an incident if the police are called?

I suppose it depends on where you are and who you are traveling with. The way that important announcements are broadcasted vary.

dk1 is referring to his earlier post where the person dived through the window.

I saw that in yesterday's log about that person.

We had a delay on the West Anglia route today, a passenger forced the doors open on a 317 just as it arrived at a station causing the emergency brakes to apply, bringing the train to a stop with the rear carriage still hanging off the platform.

One a couple of years ago, although I think it got put down to vandalism, some scrote got on at Liverpool St and urinated over the seats. That still amounts to a disruptive passenger in my book.

And then there was the disruptive passenger that you and I had to deal with who caused a fair bit of delay because he just wanted to be wedged in the doors.

Another cause of delay - the muppets who try to force doors open because they arrived on the platform as the doors were closing. And people wonder why trains end up with door problems.

Mm - quite agree. That is why I will only call for BTP assistance to my train when it is absolutely unavoidable, as I prefer to think of the bigger picture, & whether or not it is possible to keep matters under control when some village idiot (or more likely, group of village idiots) are on one of their little jaunts. To place this further into perspective, in the last 8 years, I have not called for the assistance of BTP at all, & I do count myself to be extremely fortunate in this respect - however, if the situation does warrant it, I would have no hesitation whatsoever in making that call.
