Disruption through Southampton (23/06)

There appears to be significant disruption between Brockenhurst and Eastleigh today, with all trains through the area (which includes Southampton) cancelled. Apparently it is due to a signalling fault.

Does anyone have any further information on the type of signalling fault? Is it likely to be fixed by tomorrow morning?

Trying to get home to southampton, been told at Exeter St Davids it's till end of day and go to Basingstoke to change for eastleigh then bike (have my bike) looks like salisbury gwr portsmouth service are running via eastleigh though so I will prob try that

According to internal communications, Eastleigh Area Signalling Centre shut down at 03:00 this morning, and staff weren't able to reconnect to servers meaning they were unable to "reinstate the interlocking".

Can't find anything to suggest that it won't be fixed by tomorrow morning - it just says "disruption is expected until the end of the day" (although I assume this is already publicly available information).

Didn't they replace the signals back in December in this area? This incident might not be related but it seems like a coincidence

Right now we can't confirm works will be completed by Monday morning, so you should check before you leave home tomorrow for the latest update.

Signal cabling replacement is listed in the NR news pages for Wessex route. Theres been nothing published about replacing signals themselves.

When is the message going to get through that in the modern railway, an ASC having any SPOF (Single Point Of Failure) is just, well, insane.
Hot standby master-master. configuration Interlocking, being safety critical, by 3-way voting. So I suppose that would have to be a 3-way master hot standby.
Still, what do I know, I'm no sort of signalling engineer.

Ah that might have been it, I knew they did something with the signalling around Christmas.

Indeed, it does seem not only a bad setup in general but also seems that it'd be quite easy for a potential enemy to do a lot of damage without even invading

It was awful today had to go from Salisbury to Basingstoke to get a service to Eastleigh on rammed full trains. What should have been a 4 hour hour journey took 9, left Torquay at 11am, and got to eastleigh at 8pm Had to chuck people's bags out the cycle spaces to get me and partners bikes on and shout at people to move down the train. Must have been 400+ people getting off my train at Eastleigh and trying to get taxis and buses it was manic outside the station.

Signalling has now been restored and lines to reopen from tomorrow morning, but disruption expected until 09:00 due to crew and stock displacement.

A spokesperson for Network Rail Southern Region said: “After upgrades to the signalling control systems at Eastleigh Area Signalling Centre overnight, we experienced a power surge which damaged components.

“Those components needed to be replaced, the signalling control system completely rebooted and all the specialist signalling software reinstalled.

“That work has taken longer than expected.”

I wonder which variant of surge protection equipment they used? I've seen jobs where none was specified "we never get thunder and lightning here".
