I cannot imagine the advantage of this - there is no way that the forum would ever or indeed could ever replace official industry disruption sources such as National Rail Enquiries and feeds from individual Tocs.
I actually hadn't suggested the specific section for Major Disruption as a replacement for official sources.
Merely suggested as being a locus for those with an interest in the effects of disruption and it's ensuing recovery to discuss the given situation or for anyone caught up in it or with insight into it to contribute first hand knowledge to the discussion. Tidier than various different disruption threads appearing randomly within the General section.

Even just having greater insight into what is going on is helpful - it is stressful being caught up in major disruption, and the information some forum members are able to share may help members feel more comfortable as they then have more of a clue about what is going on - this is the case for me at least.

In which case they would be able to start a thread asking for that information on the basis that they're either caught up in it or are travelling later. Or have noticed it and would like some more information about what's going on (though if the answer is "not much, the trains broken, it'll be fixed and on we go" it'll likely end up being deleted!).

I know what you mean but we really don't want to be duplicating the contents of places like Twitter, National Rail Enquires, JourneyCheck, etc. And I can't help but suspect that if we had a section titled "Disruption" or similar we'd be swamped by people simply copy pasting the latest updates from those sources. This would generate more work for us to keep the section tidied up to just threads that actually have disruption that's worth commenting on.

Fundamentally the only disruption threads that should be appearing are where someone needs help (or are asking for someone who does), or there's something to make the incident more interesting such as it's scale (see the ECML regularly) or that it's a bit out of the ordinary (see the Heart of Wales derailment). But I'm certainly open to other arguments as to why such a section should exist and what threads should be allowed within it!

I was thinking that only disruptions affecting forum members on trains caught up in it might appear on this forum Then I realised there are/were approx 80,000 members, not all of whom are active (eg members with ticketing disputes may disappear after their case is resolved.) But that is still a lot of members who could be caught up in dusruptions.

Many former colleagues got caught up in that I believe, and as you say, not a mention on here by all accounts.
What sort of comment would you like to see? For example, I notice you didn't create a thread about it to discuss it?

Coincidence (is a forum member directly caught up in it?)
I think that this plays an enormous part. If a forum member were to ask for travel advice I'd say it's always been made clear they're totally welcome to do that if they want to, and that's something I personally thoroughly appreciate.

In major disruption, e.g. weather related like last Friday 23rd August, wouldn't there be a danger of so many people requiring help that the forum gets swamped with new individual threads, not all of which would receive the attention and advice needed?

Presumably, there will be a local moderator for that forum that could restrict the amount of spam, should needs be.

If two or more people create threads on the same topic, simply report the opening post of the most recent topic, and state that it is a duplicate, and paste the URL of the original topic in your report.

There are around 10.5k active members (if you define active as having logged in within the last month), however even if a member is caught up in disruption, they may not feel the need to create a thread.

If you are making, or intend to make, a journey, and disruption is occurring, you are welcome to create a thread.

To get the ball rolling, in your opening post please state what journey you are making or intending to make, and link to, and quote from, any information already published at that point. If you are caught up in a delay and it is clear from an announcement that there is likely to be a major incident or lengthy delay, and there is no online source stating this, please mention that in your opening post (and go back and edit it later, if a source subsequently becomes available). Also, please put the date in the thread title.

SWML last Monday. Police incident at Raynes Park / New Malden. All blocked for hours, evening peak completely wrecked. Individual concerned ‘in discussions’ with the Met.

I’ve noticed that the SWML, in fact the whole Waterloo group of services, don’t get a massive amount of attention on here. Especially when compared to something like GTR where something as minor as a train type changing from a 377 to a 387 seems to generate significant attention.

Could it just be that there happen not to be so many people here who use or are affected by the SWML? I bet if it had involved the ECML there would have been something.

I really meant that if you have several people stuck at Crewe due to some major failure, but one needs to get to Edinburgh, one needs to get to Liverpool, one to London and one to Carmarthen. They all need advice but it won't be the same advice so you're going to get three or four threads, some of which may get lost in the general forums. Less likely to happen if there was a dedicated forum specifically for this sort of thing, where people could share their similar situations.

There is already a forum specifically for travel advice.

As for having multiple threads, if people feel that their particular query is unique, then they can have their own thread. However usually it is the case that when requesting advice due to an incident, one thread for the incident will suffice.

Either way, threads don't get "lost"; if you mean that they get relegated from the front page listing, that wouldn't happen for many hours, indeed probably not until at least the end of the following day, and if there have been no posts for that long, would that be an issue?

Probably only for the solitary person needing help to get from Crewe to Corrour at 23:00! Point taken  .

Which is extremely useful, but hidden away somewhat. My guess would be that most people are unaware of this excellent purpose it serves because of the title - mightn't something like "travel advice and reports" work better? "Trip Planning & Reports" implies that it's entirely for "bashing" recommendations, as it were, and not for more mundane purposes, especially since the impression I get is that the person who starts a disruption thread is usually a less active member, not nearly so familiar with the railways as people like yourself, who may be of a persuasion to shy away from the more "nerdy" (perish the phrase) areas of the Forum.

Either way, it serves many useful purposes very effectively, and I am very thankful for it!

I think trip planning has always been intended to cover planning of trips for "bashing" and also planning for and even current travel advice more widely than that, for any journey. But I can understand how maybe that hasn't totally come across in the name. Maybe it could be thought of as "Travel: advice, planning, reports".

Unfortunately I think colon-ising (pathetic, I know, couldn't resist, sorry) the title would be a bit too much of a mouthful and create exactly the opposite problem! Would the current "planning" function be as easily understood if it was changed to "advice"? My suspicion would be yes - and it would perhaps help with the disruption-threads issue that is at hand.

I wouldn't suggest that the forum name be changed in particular, I was actually just putting a slant on how to interpret it. That is to say trip planning is "travel planning", reports are "travel reports" and advice is "travel advice".

If a name change were on the cards then yes "Trip advice and reports" would work and so would "Travel planning, advice and reports". Also just removing the first word altogether may even work because "Planning, reports and advice" has a fairly obvious subject anyway, though it could still be a at risk of being too vague. But as I say, I'm not saying a change is necessary.

It's not hidden, but if anyone wants to suggest that we change the order of the forum sections (or indeed make any other suggestions), they are welcome to use the 'Contact Us' form (link at the bottom of each page) and we'll discuss it at the next meeting.

Again if anyone can think of a better title for that section, feel free to submit any such suggestions via the Contact Us form.

For the avoidance of doubt, Trip Planning refers to any sort of journey which could involve public transport, whether that be a "bashing" trip for no particular purpose other than the journey itself, a commute to work, or anything else!

I haven't read this thread in detail, but given its title I did wonder if this was the place to look for info about the WCML closure today, north of Carlisle. It seems not, does this forum have any info that I've missed? I'm interested as I was there just yesterday ...

Large trees down on the OHL blocking both lines between Lockerbie and Carstairs I believe.

As per my post earlier today on this thread, I was just looking out of interest, and my thanks to @800001 for the info. But as for the message here from @yorkie, the link you posted for "travel advice" doesn't seem to lead to anything other than the general page "Trip planning and reports", which doesn't really give much info about present disruptions ...

Network Rail Scotland have tweeted -
We expect overhead wire repairs at Beattock to be complete by approx. 21:30 this evening.

Our control team remain in close contact with @AvantiWestCoast, @TPExpressTrains and freight operators to keep them updated. We’re diverting freight services where we can.

After being affected by the failed train at Clapham Junction on Monday morning, I'm affected again today travelling from Glasgow to London. Having to detour via Edinburgh and ECML. Full ticket acceptance in place and able to reserve a seat on LNER from the platform at Waverley. The LNER service is very busy as you'd expect.

Perhaps it is a combination of many things - the frequency of significant disruptions on a particular route (the SWML is quite frequent), how well passengers are informed during the event, what alternatives there are, the proportion of commuters/regular travellers being affected, and so on. One that comes to mind for me was a couple of weeks back at Woking, where a points failure badly disrupted (off-peak) services, which was then compounded by a failed train in the station. I don't visit Woking very frequently (probably up to ten times a year) and I can't remember the last time I was there without a local disruption being in progress. As a result, I didn't see any point in starting a thread about it.

There are often threads started on the forum about disruptive events as they happen. Sometimes they are quite large events - pretty much every OLE problem on the ECML or track fault on the GWML for example, and sometimes they are quite small. Today’s derailment on the HoW line being the example that triggered me. It is almost comically amusing that the only people affected on the train concerned were one passenger ‘and his dog’.

And yet, last week, there was the largest single point* unplanned disruption on the network in terms of trains cancelled and passengers delayed, and as far as the search facility allows me, not a single mention on the forum.

So why is it that some incidents that affect very few people generate lots of comments, and yet sometimes massive incidents don’t?

* ie not a multiple location but same cause issue as often caused by extreme weather.
We are not some structured reporting service for the system, it all depends on who on here was there at the time, writing here, and who followed up. That's how it works.

Some years ago I walked into Waterloo at 7am, to find the derailment/collision that happened there shortly beforehand in full progress, so reported it here. That was just a chance. A substantial thread followed. I also recall encountering at Liverpool Street, around 1980, what must have been a very substantial bufferstop collision being cleared up by a large civils gang. There's not a mention anywhere of that I've ever found; it's all just a chance of who might be around and who wants to write about it.

I realise that. My point in starting this thread - which I perhaps didn’t explain well - was that on average, disruptions that seem to affect relatively few people seem to get raised, but those that affect relatively more people don’t get raised, especially if they are in commuter land on the third rail railway.

The extreme examples I gave being an incident on the Heart of Wales line that affected, quite literally, one man and his dog (raised on the forum), and the single biggest incident in recent years - the trespass at Raynes Park which affected several hundred thousand people (not raised).

Well, I have commented a number of times on various Elizabeth Line disruptions I ran into, all of which must have disorganised tens of thousands, and have received "here we go again with moans" rebuttals from others. Fortunately these seem to have been, very slowly, to an extent got to grips with, so don't appear here much any more.

Sorry I didn't realise you were asking for information regarding present disruptions; you can find that at the following link:

No; this thread isn't a thread for disruption updates.

I would slightly alter that and say that interesting disruptions tend to get raised, which is probably as it should be on a forum that has no intention of becoming a site for essentially transcribing information off the likes of National Rail Enquiries. Therefore a trespass incident - something that is not only likely to be somewhat sensitive, but also, sadly, not uncommon - would be of lower priority for discussion than a derailment, even if it only affected one man and his dog.

I also think that infrastructure has a part to play in it as well. If, for instance, there is a broken rail on the Great Western Main Line, then that may well get raised, with comment along the lines of "not another one", but the likes of trespass incidents are much more, for want of a better word, random, so I imagine there is less to be discussed. That's my thinking anyway - and, to use a concrete example, I posted messages regarding getting held up in Storm Henk, but not regarding a delay of longer duration when I was held up due to a trespass incident at Paddington at the tail end of the evening peak a couple of weeks ago.
