Declaring a bank holiday with only two days notice will result in many businesses ignoring it or stuffing those businesses that don't ignore it it isn't going to happen

Indeed. Another of Boris's popularist "Bread and Circuses" soundbites?

If England lose - there will be carnage , if England win - carnage (of a different order).

See some of the pictures of London the other night with idiots on double decker bus roofs etc. BTP and the Met must be dreading it - let alone other places. I suppose Sugar Loaf Halt might be a place to sit it out safely.
Might have a long wait for a train at Sugar Loaf, TfW still refusing to call there owing to social distancing…!

You couldn’t make it up!

As if there hasn’t been enough disruption to work and education over the last year, all this fuss for a poxy football match! As a country we do seem to have priorities mixed up.
Totally agree. There was no such nonsense surrounding that 1966 final, Nobby Stiles just driving home afterwards and eating fish'n'chips at a motorway service station, while Bobby Moore mowed his lawn the next afternoon, a Sunday. But then it was only the players who wore football shirts in those days.

Sugar Loaf is not now on the list. Hopton Heath was recently re-instated without TFW bothering to announce anything.

Then again it wasn't a 55 year wait then.

With the Monday after being 19th July or otherwise the so called “freedom day”, perhaps it might make a lot more sense to have the bank holiday then ;)

It makes zero sense to have any bank holiday. It’s these sort of daft ideas (“oooh let’s all have the day off from work”) which cause massive headaches for those who actually have some level of responsibility - that is any business or institution which requires any amount of planning.

That’s not saying it won’t happen - it’s just the sort of idiotic thing this pathetic imitation of a government and prime minister would do. Indeed, Boris would probably think it some kind of popularity boosting measure.

The fun police are clearly out in this thread. Who cares about trains, travel, work etc when this is the biggest game this team has played since 1996

Seemingly because it seems a large proportion of the population are claimed to suddenly feel it’s a good reason to take either Sunday and/or Monday off. We shall see what happens...
Don't blame them!

Clearly there isn’t going to be a bank holiday, can’t people see they are basically just answering a question from the tabloids and answering in a way which fits the mood

Saying ‘No don’t be ridiculous, that’s not how bank holidays work, they are planned years in advance’ would hardly fit the tone the media were looking for.

It’s like if they get asked if there will be a statue put up, or if they’ll all be knighted. You reply with something positive but vague and then It’ll all be forgotten about, which ever way the result goes.

Don't blame them!

I absolutely blame them. If they’re contracted to work, they should work. Pulling a canny sick day lumbers others with a more responsible attitude, which I find objectionable.

(I don’t include not volunteering in this, for the TOCs where Sunday working is outside the roster - that’s different).

So what?

It's only a football match, it's not important!

I agree, that's exactly what it boils down to. I'll certainly be rooting for England to win, but I don't think it correct in the slightest to justify shutting down the country on Monday so people can inebriate themselves all Sunday night. Like it or not, there are many more important things, and life doesn't change just because England won (however monumental it would be!).

Not even sure it would be legal ! you can't just 'announce' a bank holiday.

There should not be an issue really, if you are booked to go to work, then you go ! Just because we (possibly) win a football match is no excuse to skive off.
Throw a sickie to watch the Footie.....No Job !

I think it sets a terrible example to children to have schools allowing people to come in late.

When I was a child, there were things I wanted to do at certain times, which I couldn’t because it clashed with school. Part of growing up as a mature responsible adult is accepting that there’s certain things we cannot do, and that’s a fact of life.

It isn’t like watching the match would be that disruptive - doing that and then going straight to bed is perfectly feasible.

Must say I really hope England lose. Bah humbug!

Indeed, I've got to be awake at 04:30 Monday morning so I'll be heading off to bed the moment it finishes!

Presumably planned well in advance. There shouldn't be any good reason why it should be changed at short notice.
The works between Worcester and Stourbridge/Bromsgrove have been done every Sunday since early June.

so yes - been planned well in advance

And I’ll be travelling back from Swindon on GWR on Sunday evening whilst the game is going on.

Just checked their site as someone has mentioned pre-cancellations and this message is up on there:

Changes to train services Sunday 11 July

An amended timetable will be in operation on Sunday 11 July due to a significant number of staff having to self-isolate following notification from test and trace.

Where possible customers will be contacted and advised of cancellations affecting their journey.

Customers wishing to travel can choose to travel on alternative services immediately before or after their booked service or claim a full refund with no admin fee if their service is affected.

I seem to recall GWR had a load of services cancelled three years ago on Wold Cup Final day as people made themselves unavailable. This was before the semi-final which England lost, so either people were betting that England would win or GWR had an unusually high number of Croatian and/or French crews...

Zero interest in football here, whether we win or not won't change my plans (assuming there are some staff in Tesco on Monday to serve me...).
I see SWR have changed the destination boards on the side of their trains to 'it's coming home'... let's hope it does.

Do you know which ones/any specific areas, or everywhere? I need GWR Sunday, hope the disruption isn't too bad...
All over the place it seems. They’ve also blamed it on COVID which I guess is technically true (shortage of trained crew) but realistically it’s a much lower take up than average of RDW for Sunday.

Should already be in journey planners

Yeah, right

There’s a big difference between not working a booked shift (bad) and not volunteering to work a RD (perfectly acceptable).

The fact is TOCs with Sunday outside the working week (and indeed some with) rely on excellent overtime rates to lure people in for Sundays. When there’s big events on they’d obviously be somewhere else and who can blame them? It’s mad how high the % can be of the train crew on a Sunday who are working a RD…

The problem is a) reliance on RDW to run a service which is normally masked by resources teams (even M-F) and b) some TOCs having been at the wrong part of a recruitment / training spree when Covid hit. Nothing to do with “unprofessional” staff.
