Disabled rail card rules

I have an adult disabled card, my friend wishes to travel to Portsmouth to stay for a couple of days but will not travel on her own. Is it possible to purchase a period return ticket for her using my rail card and myself buying a day return again using my discount.I would accompany her throughout the journey both outwards and return. I hope I have explained myself but to summarise it would consist of 1 period return and 2 day returns the journey being from Ramsgate to Portsmouth travelling off peak, many thanks for all comments

The Manual does not seem to make explicit reference to your situation.

Size of group

One adult cardholder at the discount shown above or

One adult cardholder and one accompanying adult or child at the discount shown above or

One child cardholder without discount and one accompanying adult at the discount shown above.

Discounted price tickets purchased by a Disabled Persons Railcard holder for themselves and an accompanying adult or child should be issued for travel for the same origin and destination and should normally be of the same ticket type (e.g. Off-Peak Return). However, the accompanying adult or child can join the Railcard holder for only the outward or return leg of a journey. In this case the appropriate discounted single ticket should be issued and the ticket type may vary.

The accompanying adult or child must stay with the Railcard holder throughout the journey as the Disabled Persons Railcard validates all tickets.

That said, I don't think there is any fundamental difference whether you buy two single tickets for her (which is explicitly permitted), or whether you buy a period return for her, as long as her ticket is used in your presence at all times.

What I would recommend is that you purchase both of the day return tickets for you at the same time as buying the period return for her.

Thanks for the quick reply and for helping to clarify the situation. I studied the rules as best I could and came to the same conclusion that as long as we both travelled the full journey together it would be OK even though we had different types of tickets.

Might another option for both of you to get a period return (using imaginary dates and times) leaving Ramsgate at 09:30 on 1st August and returning at 4pm on 5th of August, then you also purchasing (for yourself) a Portsmouth-Ramsgate period return, leaving at 2pm on 1st Aug, returning at 09:30 on 5th August.

Yes thank you I have considered that but it's more expensive and need to watch the pennies. With discount a period return for her is 17.80 and I would need 2 day returns with discount would be 2 x 13.20 hence total cost 44.20 where as 3 period returns being 53.40.
