Disabled Persons Railcard - Or Not?

Hello All,

Just wanted to check if I'm missing something here.

The Disabled Persons Railcard allows you to get 1/3 off most rail fares throughout Great Britain. If you're travelling with an adult companion they also can get 1/3 off their rail fare - so you can save money for your friends too!

Other discounted fares for disabled people who do not have a Railcard


There are other concessionary discounts on fares available for visually-impaired people or wheelchair users who do not have a Disabled Persons Railcard.

Am I reading this correctly, in that if you have a valid Certificate of Visual Impairment, (which entitles you to a DPRC), then it's cheaper to present the CVI than the DPRC on a Standard Anytime Day Return?


Initially I thought that it was a case of without a railcard, only the disabled person would receive a discount, hence it's cheaper to have a railcard. But it specifically states:

If you are registered as blind or visually impaired and you are travelling with another person, the above concessionary discounts on fares apply for both you and your companion.

I'm sure I'm simply missing something, but can someone point out what it is?

That is correct.

You are not missing anything, it is a discount for the registered blind traveller and a companion, without a railcard.

Still worth getting a railcard if you buy a lot of other ticket types eg Advance and off-peak

Just bear in mind that the entitlement to discounted fares for blind or partially sighted people ONLY applies if they are travelling with a companion:

Blind or visually-impaired customers who do not have a Disabled Persons Railcard travelling with a companion

If you are registered as blind or visually impaired and you are travelling with another person, the above concessionary discounts on fares apply for both you and your companion. You cannot get a discount if you are travelling on your own. Discount applies to adult fares only.

So if you are on your own, then a Disabled Railcard would be better.
