Disabled Adult Railcards

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong place...Feel free to put it in the appropriate place...

Not sure if I have asked before, but I am wondering about Disabled Railcards and eligibility for them...

As I like to go out and about all over the place, I am restricted at the moment because I am on benefits, looking for a job, and if I was eligible for a Railcard of some kind, it would open up the possibility of looking a bit further afield for work.

Obviously you have to be disabled to get one, I have had an ENCTS card for 5 years and wondered if this could make me eligible for a Railcard.

I have serious depression and was diagnosed with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (similar to Borderline Personality Disorder)...

So would my mental health problems fit the criteria for the Disabled Railcard

Can a mental disability i.e autism or aspergers make you eligible for a DSB railcard? Looking on the flyer for it, it only mentions about physical disabilities and receiving benefits for disibility.

I only ask because I see a few people around my Facebook with DSB rated tickets who are quite clearly not physically disabled but may possibly mentally disabled.

One of whom is the brother of a former member residing near a power station in Staffordshire.

If you don't qualify for a Disabled Railcard, then if you're under 26 a Young Persons railcard gets you a similar discount.

Failing that, speak to the job centre as you may be eligible for a New Deal railcard, renamed recently to something along the lines of Job Centre Plus I think. This should help reduce train travel cost whilst job hunting.

Assuming you mean e.g. rather than i.e, I would expect so if it affects your life enough that you receive the appropriate benefit.

Bear in mind also that physical disabilites are not always immediately obvious.

if that is the criteria I am probably not eligible, I would have been back in 2009 but my DLA was cut the following year...

As for driving, no my ability to drive would not be impaired, but I do have real serious problems with concentration and paying attention, so I choose not to drive as I will be dangerous

If you are on benefits and looking for a job then you may be eligible for a Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card. Ask you Personal Adviser at the Jobcentre.

If you're receiving Disability Living Allowance (subject to the criteria posted), then yeah. Oddly however, being in receipt of DLA isn't considered a criteria for a bus pass, yet being diagnosed with a learning disability does. Inversely, for a rail card, having a diagnosed learning disability doesn't count towards it. Bit odd, but that's just how the system goes.

This is true, as this as happen to wife!, she got a disable person railcard, yet she can't get a disable person bus pass!

Yep, I'm in exactly the same position. I'm deaf in my right ear and qualify for the DPRC, but yet because I'm not deaf in my left ear I'm not entitled to the Scottish NEC.

I think you left out the important word I've added. Unless there is something strange going on and the Scottish NEC is available to people who are only deaf in their left ear but not their right!

My advice - Wing it and see, maybe with a note from your GP or Hospital Specialist.
