I used to swear by Norton, but it became very resource heavy
A test I did of Avast failed to recognise a virus infection

I have been using AVG for the last few years
Used in conjuction with Zone Alarm

Golden rule with internet access, make sure the virus definitions (and subscription) are up-to-date

AVG is the popular free one, so id try that one for now. See how it goes.

Check out ESET NOD 32, light weight on ram, works brilliantly and a years subscription is very cheap. simple user interface too with an advanced mode if you need something more technical. Oh and it comes with a months free trial too :)

http://www.xkcd.com/272 Sorry, couldn't help it :p

I have no idea what a good AV is now though (that's years of using linux for you  ). If you want proper protection you'll have to pay for it

Excuse my lack of knowledge in this field, but why a Mac? What difference does it make when it comes to virus' etc etc?

Running a Mac OS. Basically like windows in that windows is an OS as well, but much more secure and efficient. They built on MS' mistakes, and have a brilliant system.

Any mac user who tells you they can't get a virus is lying. They can, but there a lot harder to make, and not worthwhile as far more people use windows.

Mac OS is unix-based which was designed from the ground up as a multi-user environment, whereas windows, especially before XP was designed as single user.
Having a multi-user environment is generally more secure because each user only has specific permissions (no self respecting mac user would run everything as root) and is unable to change many system files. In the small chance that a virus is executed only the user's directory will be affected (of course this is not as good for personal use where user data is more valuable than the OS but it holds in corporate environments)

Plus of course there is security through obscurity, non-windows OS don't have enough market share to make viruses worthwhile. Note that malware does exist on other platforms - take the recent rouge Android apps

edit: love the tails plushy sonic :D

What's a "Sendo"?

Come along as Hedgehog if you want; just don't expect me to don a Robotnik outfit. Imagine Eggman and Sonic on the same team... Oh wait; that's happened plenty of times

Assuming you are joining up with Neil, Andi and myself, we have a +3 at Aston and a +4 at Northfield, but neither of those is very difficult. The only one that looks threatening is the final +17 from New Street to Moor Street, which will become +7 if we miss either of the above.

You really are not having much luck are you !

If was a horrible person, I would probably rescind that NWM invitation! But, given my luck is pretty rubbish as well, and that LM may be a thorn in everyone's plans, it really wouldn't make much if any difference...

I hope NeilAH doesn't read this, otherwise he may not be very impressed!

N.B.: It looks like I'm going up to Brum from London, so I shan't be meeting you until we get up there. I'm booked on the 21:12 XC back though.

Thanks for that. Brilliant explanation, and made perfect sense.
