I'm finding it difficult to be able to return to work in the rail industry, as when I was employed within it last (as aGPR2 Signalman in West Wales many years ago) it was under the umbrella and control of a single body - British Rail (at the time of the changeover to Railtrack).
I've tried to return as a Signaller in Wales, but it seems the opportunities just don't happen - I've been keeping my eye on the Network Rail recruitment pages very VERY regularly.
I'd love to return to the industry, and so, in the last couple of years, have done my PTS training and also a Track Induction course (though my PTS training now needs to be re-done as my card has recently expired), in readiness to make a change of career direction into something I really WANT to be doing with my working life.
The problem i'm coming up against is that the industry has fragmented into so many pieces, finding where to apply, contacts to speak to, and work that isn't just for a couple of nights or the odd weekend is a bit of a nightmare.
I'd love to find full-time employment on the track (as it appears that the signalbox is such a rare opportunity), so if anyone has any ideas about what I could do to improve my chances, beyond just applying for jobs when they're advertised, your comments/advice would be greatly appreciated.
