And as a follow-up to this: does your phone use your home wi-fi when available? (Or is it always using the mobile data network to access the internet?)

I tried it on wifi and it didn't seem to make any difference.

Well you can't leave us hanging on that! What was the work around?!

Well, if I click on "open in chrome" (which was news to me as I thought it was chrome in the first place), it lets me open up different pages in new tabs. It's a bit clunky but seems to work.

I'm a bit late to the party here, but LG provided their own internet browser as the default in some phones (rather than Chrome). Might be that the LG browser is the default on yours instead of Chrome, and it might not be playing nice with the forum.

This being the case, you can save yourself from "Open in Chrome" fudges by just setting chrome as the default browser:
