I tried it on wifi and it didn't seem to make any difference.

One way of testing whether there's a conflict with your phone and the forum software is to try visiting another forum using the same software. As an example, can you load https://xenforo.com/community/ on your phone?

Yes, that was the first thing I tried. As a strategy it was disappointingly ineffective

Well, if I click on "open in chrome" (which was news to me as I thought it was chrome in the first place), it lets me open up different pages in new tabs. It's a bit clunky but seems to work.

Not as far as I'm aware. There's a google search engine on the phone that I use.

I'm a bit late to the party here, but LG provided their own internet browser as the default in some phones (rather than Chrome). Might be that the LG browser is the default on yours instead of Chrome, and it might not be playing nice with the forum.

This being the case, you can save yourself from "Open in Chrome" fudges by just setting chrome as the default browser:
