Different Traction Speeds - Leeds to Hull

Hi I was curious are there different speed limits on the Leeds to Hull line for different train types? I've been on a Northern Class 170 aswell as a TPE Class 185 and it felt like Northern was able to go faster on that route for some reason? (If this is in the wrong part of the forum apologies.)

170s can use Sprinter speed differentials whereas 185s can’t so this may be why, I’m not too familiar with that route though so I’m not sure if there are any Sprinter differentials on that line.

There are definitely SP differentials on the Micklefield-Hull section, it’s why TPE used their 170s on the Piccadilly - Hull services when they had them

A different, higher, speed limit on some routes that initially only applied to Sprinters. As newer stock has been introduced Sprinter limits have applied to some other classes too such as 170s and (I think) 195s, but not 185s.

An equivalent on other lines are the EPS limits on the WCML, which apply only to 390s.

Just to add to @DanNCL the differential is down to better breaking and being lighter in weight than loco hauled etc. unfortunately the 185s are too heavy.

I could well be wrong, but from memory SP differentials are to do with weight, HST (High Speed Train) differentials are related to braking capability.

I thought Tilt- (specifically TASS-) equipped Voyagers could use EPS as well?

As Avanti have got rid of theirs there aren’t any TASS enabled Super Voyagers left to use the EPS speeds on the WCML

They could when there were still tilt equipped voyagers but none are left, Avanti withdrew theirs in December and the 221s with XC and GC have had tilt removed.
