Different operators' seats in same carriage

How did this end up like this? East Coast TGS 44074 (EDIT: Is actually 44073) apparently has had a hybrid FGW/EMT refurbishment done. I can also only find pictures of it in FGW livery (EDIT: Because 44074 is actually an FGW coach. This coach is 44073 and the picture quote is wrong.)

It had a standard EMT refurbishment, however EC took the mid carriage luggage racks out, and moved seats fro the TGS to fill the spaces. The empty space in the TGS was then filled with the gammer seats, used on EMT 158's and FGW HST's As they have to meet modern crash standards.

It is certainly an embarrassment to EastCoast! I understand the requirement but it is not what you would expect from an IC operator.

It would have been ok if it had EMT seat covers like the 158s because at least it would then match, but it has rather obvious FGW Dynamic lines seat covers. 44074 is an FGW coach so the picture quote is wrong, this is in fact 44073.

That's knowhere near FGW's standards anyway. All the rolling stock* in FGWs fleet now has the same coloured interior, and very quickly carried out too.

But Yew is correct - It is the ex East Midlands TGS / HST Rake, with the mods carried out by Wabtec (hence how the ex FGW Seats have ended up in it). Bit supprised in a way that know-one from First Group has commented on it yet to EC, as they are afterall First Group destined seats, complete with the Flying F on each seat back.

*Well, bar ex LM Dogboxes 153325 & 333.

Slightly OT, but what's the situation with this photo? As far as I knew the ex EMT set only came to East Coast this year, and it has East Coast branding on the photo yet it's running with an ex Midland Mainline liveried power car which I didn't even think there were any left of??

When the set came over, the power cars quickly had their old liveries replaced by EC silver & purple, and had their VP185 engines replaced by MTU engines. This picture took place just before this happened.

I think i saw this coach at Lincoln about 5 weeks ago, but I thought they were EC's seats rather than FGW's.

Unless there's another coach running around like this? I'm sure they were grey when i saw them

I've heard (probably on here) that the TGS has FGW seats because: The luggage racks in the middle of the coaches were removed and seats were added from the TGS, as mentioned above. As EMT has IC70 seats in their HST's, and they are no longer in production and there are no spares, the only option was to use FGW seats.

It would have made more sense to use East Coast's seats though. In fact, given the fact that that set has been with them for a considerable period of time, and the fact that the kitchen has been updated to East Coast standards, it would have made sense to give it a full Mallard refurbishment in my opinion.

Are you sure it only came to EC this year? I remember returning from seeing Flying Scotsman on the turntable at the NRM in May 2011 and boarding the stopper from York to Retford, with a Midland Mainline liveried power car on the back, and the coaches were EMT's with East Coast branding on the outside.

I know which seats i would choose to sit in (the FGW ones), at least you get an adjustable armrest and if they're exactly to FGW spec...more legroom. Those seats are also found in standard on ÖBB Railjet trains i believe, and East Coast have them in their new mocked up 225 so they must be doing something right. Anyone who doesn't like the lack of a view down the train, try out the ATW ones which are basically the same seats with lower headrests! Definitely my favourite standard class seats in the UK. IC70s are stilll very comfortable though, probably my second favourites after these when maintained properly.

The modern style seating is vastly superior.

Really? I thought they were awful! I had to spend a few hours in one on an HST from Kings Cross to Newcastle a few years ago. I swear I remembered HSTs being far more comfortable than that!

I'm the opposite, I'm delighted First replaced those horid IC70's with something much more comfortable and with much better leg-room.

I didn't like any of the BR seats in the coaching stock, every time I get on a GA MK3 with their horrid seats with armrests stuck in place making it hard to get in and out of a table seat I remind myself.

For reference I'm a few inches over 6ft.

I see a similar set come through Peterborough in 2011 as well, (EMT colours with East Coast decals)
