Does Woking SWR depot only have commercial guards, as recently SWR put out apps for Metro Guards for the Woking Depot?
We have both at Woking. We sign exactly the same routes between commercial and metro. Metro Guards at Woking only do Pompey on weekends unless covering a commercial job. Same is true for Guildford metro guards.

That seems a bit illogical. Who still does, Reading and Bristol PW?
Reading, Bristol Parkway, and Swansea. Not sure about Cardiff, they probably still do.

It is illogical. But worse decisions on traction/route knowledge have been made recently, especially with drivers.

To be fair, there's not a lot of non DOO 387 work that needs covering anyway. It might be a struggle to keep TMs at so many depots competent?

One could argue why Swansea has work but not Swindon. At least 387s are on Swindon’s doorstep whilst Swansea have to travel to Cardiff to work one.

Oh absolutely - if you're going to give it to fewer depots, on first examination it would make more sense to give it to Swindon. I'm sure GWR have their reasons though.

Question regarding signing diversionary routes… I understand that some routes are rarely used but there are couple that I can’t seem to find any evidence of being used yet they are listed as signed.

I’m sure there are plenty more I haven’t noticed but the two I have in mind are Southern conductors signing from Streatham Common to Imperial Wharf via Brixton, and XC from Basingstoke to Southampton via Andover. Are certain trains diverted to maintain competency and if so how often or does anyone have any recent examples?

I know this is more for the drivers thread but the I’ve been wondering the same thing about GWR’s HEX drivers having T4 listed too?

Can’t speak for other TOCs, but we have route refresh days that we can use to maintain competency on routes that we haven’t covered in the last six months.

Some routes can be done with planned diversions during engineering works, I know XC on the Haslemere divert they physically go out on the route to refresh it as I have had quite a few of there crew refreshing it on my trains in the past. Some refreshing can also be done via cab ride style videos like for example for SWR the Byfleet Curve is one of them

For 6 years as a guard I signed the Oxley chord near Wolverhampton (allowing trains to run directly from the Stafford line to Shrewsbury and vice versa without having to reverse in the station). To this day I've still never actually passed over it on a train, but I have watched the video!

Similar with Ely West Curve and Sleaford Avoider for EMR. Interestingly I've worked trains over all of my diversionary routes although the last time I worked over High Level Goods from Trent South to Attenborough Junction was in August 2013!

I think GWR drivers used to refresh between Yeovil Junction and Yeovil Pen Mill on foot

Of course, there's a service these days!

This recent document i obtained may be of use to provide some other updates for SWR guards.

On the traction tab the top is drivers and the middle is commercial guards and the bottom is metro guards.

On the route tab anything with the two digit depot code and no other letter means that all drivers and guards based there sign it. Anything with "D" after it means only drivers sign it. Anything with "C" after it means only commercial guards sign it. Anything with "G" after it means only metro guards sign it.

Anything in green means all sign it. Anything in orange means most but not all sign it. Anything in red means only a small amount sign it. Although note that the 701 will soon turn from red to orange to green for most depots if not already.

You haven’t missed much. 8 years as a guard at Wolves and I’ve only been over it once. We do have a booked job via the chord every 6 weeks now. 5D80 Oxley - Stafford, 1D80 starts at Stafford every 6 weeks.

I see XC are recruiting for Senior Conductors at Bristol Temple Meads. Knowing that so few 170s work to/from Bristol Temple Meads and SCs don't appear to sign 220/221s, would I be right to guess that many of their diagrams start and/or finish travelling pass on other trains?

I would imagine almost all their duties involve passing on other trains except for those rare early morning or late evening 170 workings that go to Bristol Temple Meads station. I would also be curious if anyone knows where they swap over. I had presumed they would start and finish their duties at Cardiff Central and pass to and from there on GWR trains but i suppose Cheltenham Spa or Gloucester are also possibilities.

I believe SWR Yeovil guards are learning the “Romsey rocket” services but not Eastleigh - Basingstoke.

It was mostly Newport for a while but all of those have been used at one time or another (although crew swaps at Cheltenham are few and far between)

To update your records:-
Delete class 255s from all GWR guards.
Add 175s to Penzance,Plymouth and Exeter HSS TMs. And Par West Conductors.
