hey numbering sequences issued by the RSL,
units at depot level would be referrred by their last 3 numbers, it made sure that units were not confused, u could have several 001 sets,
Example - i started at ilford tech office in the level 5 I had to learn the different classes - i knew their TOPS id's, not their local ids, LTS units - 302s, clactons - 309, 307 - southenders. etc, also had to learn their last prefix numbers and their class code..my first 2 months at Ilford in technical services was a hard learning curve.
it got easier and quicker as it got on
the newer fleets that ilford took on used their full number, as the older fleets were switched off, full unit numbers have become the norm.
they were also subtle differences in the seating layouts - 321/4 had a bigger first class.
hence 321/3 - 301-366,
321/4 - 401-448
321/9- 901 onwards
322/4 481-485 to avoid confusion with the 321/4 series
its all about in many cases local knowledge, not confusing units with each other,
