I’ve seen an article recently on this former branch line in an old (I think) Trains Illustrated book from 1963. Can’t say I remember seeing any shots of diesels/dmus but I’ll dig it out again this evening to check.

I believe it was steam until the end, usually a Standard 4 and single Brake Second coach.

Still a diesel that got to Killin, though, special or not

Sure I can remember magazine photos of a Class 27 and a single pre-nationalisation coach. Ballachulish the same.

A perusal of "B.R. Diesel Traction in Scotland", a humungous hardback containing hundreds of black and white illustrations dating back to the mid-1950s, reveals a number of pictures of the aforementioned Six Lochs specials which included Killin in their schedule. These ran from Glasgow in the summer months and were DMU operated, mostly using Cravens sets though other types also appeared. As for diesel locos it appears the most common type on the Callander and Oban route was the NBL Bo-Bo (TOPS class 21), including on the demolition trains. Highly likely that these would have reached Killin on engineers' trains though perhaps not on revenue trips. However no photos of such workings on the branch appear in the book.

Here is another shot of Killin (credited to S. Rickard) once again a 'Six Lochs Landcruise' from Glasgow but formed of 3x 3 car class 107 dmus showing the passengers making their way back to the train after visiting Killin. Dated April 1961.
