Diesel hauling the Bury line class 504s

There's a video on youtube, showing the nrun down of the Bury line class 504s in 1991. The video starts with 37426 hauling four or 5 units one evening, at Besses o' the barn. Thing is, why were the 504s diesel hauled when the line was still mainly in use, and the power on.

Enroute to the scrapyard. Also the shoe gear would have been removed at Bury as it would have made the units out of gauge.

As above definitely. Some of the units being dragged look like they haven’t been used in quite a while too.

To be fair, at the start of the video, the caption at the bottom does state they are being taken to MC Metals for scrap....

The ELR did briefly run a unit either side of a class 24/33? when they had two units to play with

'sensible' couplings - drop head Buckeye on 504 to reveal drawhook then either emergency 'screw' coupling or loco screw coupling with air brake pipe extension so loco air brake pipe can reach nose mounted emu air brake pipe.....
