Didcot to Plymouth offpeak returns

Hi,
Does anyone have any suggestions for splitting a ticket, Didcot to Plymouth, with an offpeak return (£82).

Using this route (all these are stopping stations):

Swindon (Wilts) [SWI]
Chippenham [CPM]
Bath Spa [BTH]
Bristol Temple Meads [BRI]
Taunton [TAU]
Tiverton Parkway [TVP]
Exeter St David's [EXD]
Newton Abbot [NTA]
Totnes [TOT]

I've got:
did-bth: £24.30
bth-ply: £56
Saving: £1.70 :-/

did-bri - £34.3
bri-exd - £27.9
exd-ply: £18
Saving: £1.80 :-/

did-bath: £24.30
bth-tvp: £29.20
tvp-ply: 19.5
Saving: £9!!! (For some reason bath-tvp is considerably cheaper than bristol to tvp, which is mostly where this saving comes from).

Anyone got any advance on the £9 saving? (might be able to save a £couple more on the tvp-ply segment as there are advances available).

I'll go the other way and suggest a ticket that's actually more expensive but may be far more interesting...


Didcot - Swindon. Super Off-Peak Return. £17.10
3 days in 7 Freedom of the South West Rover £79.00

Total of £96.10.
Obviously that's more than the bare minimum you could get the tickets for but it gives a lot of extra routing options and an extra day to travel anywhere in the region.
Maybe those would be worth the bit extra?

Exactly.
In contrast, Didcot to Bristol is £34.30. Didcot to Bath is £24.30. A £10 reduction for that leg, but the leg you highlighted is only a £4 increase, thus this gives a £6 saving overall. I wasn't as clear as I could have been, sorry about that.

I don't seem to be able to make it cheaper than that but maybe others have some ideas.

Tiverton-Plymouth can be done on a Devon day Ranger for £10 after 09.30. If you're coming back the same day that makes a saving. Even if you're travelling on 2 days, it's only 50p more than a return and gives you that extra flexibility. Also, there's an evening version for £5, so you could save that way too if one direction is in the evening.

Just a quick FYI, but it seems to be £80.90, I guess it went up since last you looked. - http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/pr0f61f9c35ce741009c0e3842403e09.aspx - alas while the idea is tempting, this is just for a short weekend with minimal travelling at the destination.


As I'm travelling in the evening, the Devon Evening Ranger is pretty much exactly what I want probably. So that puts the saving in the £18.50 range. Now if only I could get to Tiverton Parkway cheaply...
