Other than the current 4 trains per day at Crewe has CrossCountry ever operated more trains through there or have they always gone through Stoke-on-Trent? Cheers to anyone who knows.

I am aware of the Birmingham-Scotland trains they operated for a few weeks in 2007 at Crewe as well.

You used to have the Poole to Liverpool trains and return which were XC class 47s.

As far as i know they have always been via Stoke. I am pretty sure that they only started going via Crewe when XC took over from virgin and they got rid of the services that went down the WCML via Preston, instead of going via York.

There were services under Virgin's tenure of XC that ran via Manchester-Crewe-beyond too I believe - there was certainly 3-4 a day according to the 1999 timetable I have and I seem to remember them being in timetables around 2005-06~.

Didn't the short lived Liverpool - Portsmouth go via Crewe? I'm sure I got one one of those back to Birmingham once.

Back in the days of Virgin XC didn't many of their Birmingham - Scotland trains extend beyond Birmingham to the south and south east?

I thought after around summer 2005 all Birmingham/further south bound Anglo Scottish West coast mainline cross country trains were routed via Crewe and the Scotland to Manchester route became a separate service ,until everything changed again when Virgin cross country ceased operating about 2 years later with TPE and VirginWC taking over

From my recollections, the vast majority of Birmingham - Scotland (via WCML) went via Crewe and Warrington. There were a few services that went via Manchester Pic - most of these went via Stoke, but there were one or two that went via Wilmslow. As an example, in the mid-1990's, there was a Brighton to Edinburgh service that went via Wilmslow. It was a 47 all the way to Preston then it was replaced with an 86 to Edinburgh. I did the full run in September 1996.
