Did I act too quickly?

I rarely use the train, with the exception of when I miss my school bus (I'm 18) so therefore I've always used my school zero fare pass on the rare occasions this has happened. I've recently returned from my holiday and I was travelling home from an interview with a friend who also had an interview at the same place, when I bought a half fare ticket because he had a 'scholars pass' which at a quick glance looks almost identical to mine, and I thought it was the same, admittedly naïvely. I was then asked for my ticket by the conductor, who explained to me that they 1) they are different as well as 2) it was 10 days out of date (although prominently placed, I just never thought about that) and he took my pass before asking me to pay the full price. Fair enough, so I offer him my card, but it was declined. I had no cash on me. So he said buy a ticket at the station. I did, after sprinting home to get cash, as I thought maybe id spent more than I thought and had no money left on my card. I then ran back, paid for the ticket and the man in the ticket office explained that my card was only rejected because my card doesn't work on offline systems. So anyway, I went home feeling bad as it was a genuine honest mistake and I emailed northern to tell them the situation, and was there anyway to prove that I did in the end buy the ticket, as I think the conductor saw me get off the train in the opposite direction to the ticket office. Northern rail never replied
What should I do?

I admire your honesty here, as most wouldn't bother in such a situation! Not sure what actually occurred or indeed what you're worries about as it seems nothing has happened in that you bought a ticket in the end and the matter is now closed? No need to email the company if no further action was taken!

I have already emailed them, but as they took the pass and the train conductor saw me leave in the opposite direction, I assumed he would hand it in and thus report me, hence my email. However on reflection (and extensive reading of this area on the forums) the train conductor may not have reported it, in which case have I just admitted fare avoidance to northern rail, when potentially it would never have got back to them

What should I do?
Unless there's more to this than you've told us, nothing more needs to be done.

Your name & address wasn't taken, was it?

You were asked to pay nothing more than the full fare due, which you paid, so that's the end of the matter.

Don't try to use that card on board again though if it's an 'online only' card.

No, but the out of date (and snapped in my back pocket during that train journey) pass was, I'm sure it cannot be that hard to find someone's address when they have your name, especially when its on the letterhead of the email that I sent to them

I highly doubt Northern would go chasing after you if a report was not filled in at the time.

How long ago was this? I take it you have not recieved anything in the post from them and until you do,do as Yorkie says and do nothing.

If and when they send you a letter then come back for solid advice as theres not a lot anyone can do for you right now.

If it was? It may well have been reported, I wasn't exactly the most innocent looking of people, running past the conductor after getting off the train in the opposite direction after he told me to buy a full price ticket at the station. Plus with my pass and name, he could easily have reported it

Thank you anyway, this only happened on Monday and from everything I've heard northern take a while to send you letters, so I guess I will have to wait and see

Chill. You are worrying over nothing.

As others said, in the highly unlikely event that Northern decide to pursue this matter, come back and we can discuss a way forward. Until then, you are not doing yourself any good and you need to get on with life.

It simply would not be worth Northern spending the additional manpower to collate all this information together, given the RPI never reported you. The confiscated card probably went into a pile to be destroyed, if it was handed in at all.

I doubt you'll hear another word about it but it would be wise to keep the ticket you eventually bought in a safe place. If you do hear anything else the ticket is your proof that you did pay as instructed.
