I’ve been wondering if such a system exists to categorise stations and award them lettered grades based on their characteristics. Searching the forums out of curiosity, I’ve discovered that there does seem to be a system putting each station into a category from A to F, although most examples seem to be explained in the Station Association thread. What I’d be interested to find out more about is what criteria is assessed to determine which category a station fits into?
  • Annual passenger numbers?
  • Annual ticket revenue?
  • Amount of trains calling per hour?
  • Accessibility?
  • Quality of facilities?
  • Physical features, such as number of platforms or trainshed?

There seems to be a Wikipedia article on this subject. (Sorry, can’t do link from mobile device.)

There’s a fairly reasonable explanation in the 2009 DfT better stations report, which is one of the references for the Wiki article. But I can’t get access to it from the archives, just the front page comes up. I might have a copy on my PC so I’ll attach it later if no one’s found a link it in the meantime. (Now done in post # 5)
