Detrained due to catching the wrong train

My friend is travelling from Euston to Birmingham at present.

He was travelling on an Advance ticket booked on the Virgin 11:23 service, but incorrectly travelled on the London Midland 11:13 service. He was detrained at an intermediate station.

He has no cash and is travelling to a homeless shelter in Birmingham.

I presume it is at the guard's discretion, if they allow him to travel, with a now invalid ticket?

Which intermediate station is that?

I would prefer not to say, but it is a London Midland manned station.

I assume that the Virgin he is booked on doesn't stop there? In that case, I would say that it is indeed down to discretion. Failing that, he might need to do a SILK arrangement.

Given that the Virgin service he is booked on is only 10 minutes behind the LM he caught, it is safe to say that he has now missed it.

The first station after Watford Junction the 11:23 is scheduled to stop at is Coventry.

My friend will have seen his booked train pass by whilst waiting at the LM station.
