Anyone no anything about a detached retina,my father in law was told 18 months ago that he would have to give up driving within 1 year but he has never said anymore about it to us.Would his doctor just advise him not to drive or tell the DVLA?

My uncle was a train driver when he woke up one day with a detached retina, he never drove a train again but happily he can still drive on the roads with no problems at all, indeed my next door neighbour also has a false eye and again he drives with no issues, i see (excuse the pun) no reason why your father inlaw would have to give up his driving licence.
The licence holder only has to report the issue to the DVLA
The DVLA then may ask for a report from the Doctor
There may be a charge applied by the Doctor to submit this report
The DVLA may then ask for the licence back to apply a health endorsement, in the same way as it is applied for wearing glasses, etc
Doctors cannot report their patients to the DVLA without the patient's consent. Drivers are required by law to report relevant health issues to the Driver's Medical Branch. In the case of retinal treatment there is no need For car drivers to report it to the DVLA provided his eyesight in the good eye meets the legal standard (his optician can advise on this).
If it affects both eyes he will need to inform the DVLA by completing and returning a V1 medical questionnaire.
If he drives a Bus or Lorry he will need to inform the DVLA regardless using a V1V medical questionnaire.
In the light of his GP's warning I recommend that he consults an optician for advice on his fitness to drive and should follow any advice given regarding eyesight correction and frequency of retests.
Thanks for your answers,my worry is that because he lives in the middle of nowhere and needs a car he may still be driving after being told not to.He was told he could have surgery but at 76 he thinks it's to much trouble for him.
