Hi

I noticed earlier that 350 126 now sounds like the /2s. Have they undergone a modification, similar to the one that the DC ones had, which now also sound like that IIRC. Do all desiros now sound like this

The 350/1s have certainly been modified, with the result that they now produce the same sound as the 350/2s (with the sudden change in 'tone' as they accelerate). I think more or less all the 350/1s have undergone this modification now, though I'm afraid I'm not sure exactly what has been done.

I'm sure Pumbaa will be along shortly to elaborate! :)

I thought they still had it due to the fact Southern sometimes borrow them?

They were removed shortly after they were delivered, but some had the shoes put back on due to being loaned to Southern, not sure if those still have them however now that they have returned.

As far as I know the last unit to be modified was late 2009 / early 2010.

I may be wrong, but I think that prior to being borrowed by Southern, they were fitted with the third rail shoes (albeit held in an 'up' position). However, since Southern returned them the third rail shoes have been removed altogether (though they can still, I believe, be refitted fairly easily).

No, I'm pretty sure they were removed, and stored in Northampton

'Borrowed them' - it was a one off organised when the 377/5s were late. No reason why it should happen again.

That's what you think, I've got a strong feeling that FCC will be borrowing Southern's 377/3s come Dec in order to run 12 cars on the Thameslink.

Yes they will, but the franchise spec only calls for for three units per day - not nearly all of them as happened before.

One of the problems with determining if the shoes are fitted or not, is that when a 350/1 is running on AC the shoe arms and contact shoes are raised and out of sight behind the shoe beam. From platform level the shoes cannot actually be seen. I'm not doubting they've now been removed - as the shoe itself is an easily removable part, but it isn't obvious to look at as the arm itself will be in the raised position anyway.

I presume you mean /2s? As /3s are DC 3 car units

If you thought Desiro's sounded strange, check out the Siemens Taurus. Sounds like a drunken saxophonist practising his scales!

World's fastest loco i'm led to believe, but also the weirdest sounding in my book!

You called?! ;)

Everyone's got the general gist - the transformers and elements of the traction motors were replaced during delivery of the /2s, the idea being common maintenance was easier rather than slightly different regimes for two almost identical subclasses. They were easy to spot when being replaced - the transformer casing was a light blue in the pantograph well. Unfortunately now they're all brown!

And the shoegear is merely stored in a cupboard at Kings Heath. It can be re-assembled and functional in a matter of hours.

I think you're right but i'm not sure that all 350/1s have undergone the transformation, it'll be interesting to know whether they do the same to the 350/3s and the 350/4s!
