Hey guys,

Hope everyone is making good use of today's weather. As we're entering the summer, it's time for me to start planning my annual rail trips to the country. I've never done a Pacer before and I would really like to do one in the limited days they have left. I know Northern have some but I don't know what lines they operate fully.

I want to get a Derbyshire Wayfarer rover for other reasons but noticed it covers the Hope Valley line from Sheffield to New Mills Central. Would it be possible to get a Pacer along this stretch or is it a Sprinter?

Whenever I've travelled on the Hope Valley stopping services recently they have been Class 142 pacers.

I think the odd 150 does turn up though.

That's good to know, I really don't want a Sprinter especially as it is two hourly.

Does anyone have diagrams of what service is booked to be what?

Local Stopper along the Hope Valley are now hourly 7 days of the week. Unfortunately I believe most of them are timed for, and have indeed been running, as 150s, normally doubled up. Pacers are no longer the norm on the route I'm afraid.

Monday to Saturday, please if possible! Depending what's on offer I'll see what day to go for. It is way out of my patch so I am sorry for being unfamiliar with the network that side of the world!

Generally the slow Sheffield to Leeds (the ones via Castleford and the ones via Bolton-On-Dearne) are 144s, or occasionally 142s.

Sheffield to Huddersfield is 144s, and Sheffield to Adwick is 142s, or occasionally 144s.

If you're wanting pacers only, AVOID the Nottingham-Sheffield-Leeds limited stoppers, the services to East Yorkshire (Hull, Brid, Scarborough) and avoid Lincoln services as they're now using 158s more often than not.

A SYConnect+ will cover you for half, if not two-thirds of the Leeds routes (up to Darton on the 'via Castleford' and up to Moorthorpe on the 'via Bolton-On-Dearne') as well as the full Sheffield to Adwick and up to Denby Dale on the Huddersfield service (the viaducts from Penistone to Denby Dale are worth it alone).

The SYConnect+ also affords unlimited Bus and Tram for the day if you so fancy.

The only other is the South Pennies, which will do you for the full 'via Castleford' Leeds train and the full Huddersfield train, from which you can get more Pacers at Leeds and one or two at Huddersfield.

Don't mention it! One last tip - you'll regularly find a pacer parked up in bay platforms 3 and 4 in Sheffield - it's the middle island to the North of the station.
