Derby to York to Manchester

I'm trying to make the following journey:

On Friday evening I need to get from Derby to York and on Sunday from York to Manchester. To keep things simple, say I need flexible tickets.

I've had a quick look through available tickets and the best I can come up with is Blythe Bridge to York, an offpeak return at £55.70. It's valid via both Manchester and Derby and is eminently reasonable on both routes, having almost identical journey times -- so I shouldn't have any trouble at all with it being queried.

Would be grateful for any better suggestions.

A thought -- can I buy a Derby to York return, excess the return portion to Blythe Bridge, then go via Manchester? Or am I restricted to routes via the original outward origin and from the original outward origin to the excessed destination?

I can get itineraries for a Manchester-York ticket via Sheffield and e.g. via Huddersfield.

So combine an £11.40 Derby-Sheffield day single with a £28.60 Manchester-York offpeak return, on the outward journey starting late at Sheffield on the outward part of the Manchester-York ticket (which has restriction TR which does not restrict breaks of journey).

Ah -- just realised that Manchester-York doesn't allow journeys that go from Sheffield via Leeds, and only allows via Doncaster (maps HV+DO). I guess I can probably live with it, but is there anything (even slightly more expensive) that would allow me the additional route?
