Derby to Wrexham (and back)

I've got to do these trips and it looks like the National Rail Planner only shows journeys via Crewe and Chester. Is the trip via Birmingham and Shrewsbury also an accepted route for a day return.

Via Birmingham and Shrewsbury is valid on maps CE+BC in the routeing guide.

However, booking engines won't give you itineraries this way since the route has been removed from the electronic version of the routeing guide. I believe this is another example of an attempt to remove a reasonable route by stealth.

This, of course, neatly undercuts the overpriced through fare (priced by CrossCountry and which it thinks is invalid) by splitting fares at Birmingham and even offering advance fares which don't exist on the through ticket.

Only if you go for more restrictive tickets, I think. There are no day returns between Wrexham and Derby (or day singles, for that matter), so anyone taking a day trip will benefit from splitting. I'm not sure there are any splits via Birmingham if you don't go that way.

I'm surprised that NRE doesn't show the trains via Birmingham. I didn't think they used the number of tickets needed for a journey when deciding what to show in the results, but now I need to select Derby to Ruabon or something to see the fastest trains.

I agree with your conclusion, but I must point out that when I used this ticket; albeit in the opposite direction, I ran in to problems when gripped between Birmingham and Derby on XC. Worth a thought if the OP is not confident in why the ticket is valid.
