Next weekend I need to travel from Derby to Wolverhampton on Saturday morning, then Wolverhampton to Birmingham on Saturday afternoon, stop overnight and then travel back Birmingham to Derby on Sunday (exact times not yet decided). Is this allowed on a DBY-WVH off-peak return? Or does anyone have any better ideas?

The only rule is that you have to resume your journey from Birmingham before 1200 on the Sunday.

That's not right. The return portion of an Off-Peak Return is valid for a month. jurassic is quoting the rule for resuming after an overnight break on the outward portion of an Off-Peak Return.

Cheers, I suspected this would be the case but with no way to check the restriction codes myself I thought it was best to double-check.

This brings up a question in my mind.

Had it not been an Off Peak Return but rather an Off Peak Day Return which permits BoJ, would the OP still have been allowed onward travel on the first valid service the following morning or did the Wolves - Brum train have to be a service without valid connections back to Derby?

I know that something w.r.t. overnight stays for Day Return tickets exists but could never quite grasp the idea.

There is no Off Peak Day Return (CDR) Derby - Wolverhampton. To make a realistic example, I've chosen a CDR Derby - Sandwell & Dudley, which takes restriction code BX. This code allows break of journey on both outward and return legs and the rule about overnight break is
National Fares Manual NFM 07 CD said:
Off-Peak Day Singles and Returns, GroupSave Day Returns:
Valid for travel on the date shown on the ticket and until 0230 the following day. If it is not possible to complete the journey before this time, travel is allowed until 1200 the day after travel - but no further break of journey is allowed.
Thus it would be allowed to break this journey at Birmingham New Street on the return leg if the passenger arrived there from Sandwell & Dudley after the last train to Derby had left (or, I think, on a train scheduled to arrive at Birmingham New Street at a time which gave less than the minimum connection time into the last train to Derby).

I think that the word travel in blue is a typo and should read "the date shown on the ticket". But my friend who has access to The Manual tells me that the same wording is used in that internal industry document.
