I had a request from someone on another forum, asking about the validity of a Derby to Stafford ticket.

I looked it up on the Routeing Guide, and I could find the only valid route to be: Derby-Stoke on Trent-Stafford. Although I am sure guards would be fine with it via Tamworth/Rugeley.

Apparently rail staff think it's valid via Leicester and he's been using it that way for 2 years without problems.

Thoughts?

apparently there is an easement (you an look it up on the easements section of the RG, I can't easily access it now on my mobile) along the lines of journeys via derby can go via leicester a weekends (only)! I do recall seeing it a while back - i'd just forgotten!

I think it is only meantto allow joueneys that are valid to tamworth/brum to allow via leicester though, this ticket is not meant to be used via tamworth and clearly leicester to nuneaton is an alternative to that. going via leicester to get to stafford is extreme. the rgRG does not make it clear what is intended.

valid via leicester? maybe. reasonable? no. but just because a route isdaft or unreasonable doesn't make it not valid.
