Cheaper than what? A £64-00 "Anytime" single.

If you travel on the 0911 or 1011 or 1111 or 1144 or 1211 or 1244 or 1311 services, there's a £28-50 advance single currently available. Less flexibility, but half the price.

Splitting tickets at York into Derby/York and York/Newcastle legs may save you a bit more money.

If you have a valid railcard, that'll save you some more money also.

Cheapest I can find is an Advance Single from Sheffield to Newcastle at only £11. That is on the National Express East Coast Site and involves an additional change at Doncaster.
Advance single from Derby to Sheffield is only £6

10.24 from Sheffield arrive in Newcastle at 12.50
Northern trains to Doncaster then NXEC to Newcastle.
Plenty of £6 tickets available on most services from Derby and so you can give yourself plenty of time at Sheffield just in case of any delays.
09.11 from Derby would give you 40 minutes at Sheffield. I know it makes it a long journey but you can't be too careful when splitting AP tickets.

For walk-on fares the usual splitting points are Sheffield and York. This saves a lot of money when doing a day return and/or when travelling at peak time.

If AP is an option then I'd take that advice above.
