Derby to Huddersfield question

Hypothetical question, I am travelling from Derby to Huddersfield via Sheffield, on an Off Peak Return, I want to break my journey at Barnsley for a couple of hours, the trains to Huddersfield are only hourly, if I am late arriving at Sheffield is it permitted to catch the Leeds train from Sheffield to Barnsley?

Yes, that's fine. It doesn't matter where the service is going to, so long as your actual journey stays on the permitted route(s). Which, in this case, it would.
