Derby Stations Refurbishment

Was at Derby today and noticed real development has been made on the new look compared to some of the previous months, looking really good. Just one thing I noticed on platform 2B, they are consructing the area aroud there and I could see a shower being fitted in one of the rooms! :? Will be interesting to see what comes of this, don't know wther it will be for passenger/staff use or anything, but overall I look forward to seeing the final result. Its gonna looa stunning station.

The race is on, I wonder which will be completed first, that or the delayed East Midlands Parkway which has got stairs constructed on the entrance building done by the looks of things.

Derby station is due to be finished in June 2009. I have to agree on how much better its starting to look without the boarding and scafolding! I just wish they would put the seats back on platform 1B! When its done I'm sure it will look very nice.

Pfft - it's a joke really isn't it. Mind you, it would be a lot quicker if they were allowed to close the station, but that's just not cricket.

But the work has only started recently, the green/yellow cladding was support for the unsafe structure.

Wasn't that put up in 2005...? Took them seemingly forever to replace the footbridge, which doesn't look remotely finished as you go up the stairs on them. Mind you, I had the fortune of being on a Cardiff to Nottingham 170 that wasn't booked to call at Derby (using that freight-only line from Stenson Junction instead) one day during that time, so it's not all bad. Came back the same day via Derby (seemed weird some trains called, some didn't), but I did cop platform 5's track so I can't complain. Was a fairly big mileage move on a CT 158 which was nice too coming back to Cardiff.

Still, my original point still stands. They should have done it in the same manner as Leeds (put up a temporary station and put up a very nice looking, very modern station in place around the corner). Make everything call at Willington and Burton-on-Trent (running fast coaches to Derby to/from the two) and run them via that freight-only line, with XC stuff going up then through Toton with the next stop at Chesterfield for everything (to allow northbound passengers to alight from coaches there and join the train). Passengers going north from Nottingham would have been directed onto diverted MML HSTs (London to Sheffield and Leeds HSTs would have been directed this way under my plans, buses Nottingham to Derby for local passengers) that would have then been sent up through Toton.

But no, surely this wouldn't have made sense. They'd rather spend 4 years doing the work instead of spending something like 6-9 months maximum on a total blockade. Doesn't make sense to me, but there we go.

I think work started on the actual refurbishment of the station in the summer, starting with platform 1. Based on my experience of going through the station every weekday, the progress of the refurb seems to be incredibly slow and it is pretty shameful how long it took to get it started. The station has been a complete eyesore for years.

In some respects it was a good job its been a slow project, had they done it quick then all those new MML signs would have needed chainging
