Derby-London-Nottingham

I've read this forum for some time, but have not posted until now.

I live in Nottingham and work in Derby. Therefore It's not uncommon for me to want to travel to London directly from work, then return home to Nottingham.
What is the best way to do this from a train ticket perspective?

An 'open jaw' return ticket would surely be closest to what I'd be looking for, but doesn't seem to exist.
Two advaned singles can be sensible cost wise in comparison to an open return between either Nottingham or Derby, however I often rather not be comitted to a specific train

Is Derby counted as further away from London than Derby, which would make a Derby - London return valid; or would I need a seperate Derby - Nottingham ticket to make that approach work?

London to Derby tickets are valid via Nottingham so the standard ticket range is fine for what you want to do, if they work for you.

Having a quick look through Brfares.com and noticed that walk up fares from London to Nottingham via Grantham are cheaper than "any permitted route". In the case of Super off peak, £43 Vs £80.

London to Derby tickets are valid via Nottingham so the standard ticket range is fine for what you want to do, if they work for you.

As I interpret the OP will be travelling Nottingham>Derby then Derby>London then London>Nottingham.

What the OP does not say is if they have a season ticket for Nottingham<>Derby.
If they do then a Return from Derby to London will work as they just end short at Nottingham.
If they do not is a Nottingham>London return valid via Derby and is the outward ticket valid for break-of-journey at Derby? If so fine although if the Nottingham>Derby journey is in the morning peak an anytime ticket would be required so an anytime single Nottingham>Derby then an off-peak return Derby>London would be significantly cheaper. If valid a super off-peak return would be even cheaper.

In general, Derby-London tickets are valid via Nottingham and Nottingham-London tickets are valid via Derby.

It sounds like I can get an open return from Nottingham to London, use that to travel to work in Derby on a Friday morning, onwards to London that evening, then use the return portion to get on a St Pancras - Nottingham train on the Sunday afternoon. Am I understanding that correctly?

Am I likely to have any issues with ticket barriers or inspectors?

Yes that will work fine, and no you are very unlikely to have any issues, as everyone in these parts is very used to people doubling back all over the place.
