Derby, Crewe or Rugeley?

Hello all,

I wish to go out tomorrow to get some photos, like a spur of the moment type thing like I normally do.

Where is the best place and what are the situations regarding photos at Derby, Crewe and Rugeley?

I only ask because I wish to get a variety of Freight and passenger trains as well as a splash of colour on the WCML rather than the MML (Derby isn't too bad, though, you can get a variety)

I don't want to take a trip all the way out there and get denied permissions to take photos on the platforms and such? whats the best way of going about things?

Saturdays not brilliant for freight.
Rugeley unstaffed, only a basic shelter so it might be a bit "draughty" if we get wintry weather.
Never encountered problems with photography at Derby or Crewe, but behave safely - keep away from platform edges, don't use tripod in silly locations where it might be a trip hazard.
Crewe - most freight does not pass through the station.

Derby has ticket barriers, so you will need some form of ticket to get on the platforms.

Since I'll be travelling by train it won't be a problem

Might avoid crewe then, Rugeley sounds good to me, I spent 3 hours at Syston station last week and I was so frozen that I couldn't press the trigger well by the end of it

I know there isn't much freight on a saturday, but I think Derby might be my best bet... Unless I go the opposite way to Water Orton?

Cheers mate, thanks for the heads up! I forgot about that match myself, I was contemplating peterborough right this second and then spotted this post so Am very greatful for that!

Admittedly it will be an early start for me as I have work at 4pm, so an hours train ride is the max I will do, so It might be Water Orton or Nuneaton now (or derby if anyone knows of any movements of interest?)
