Derailment at Rock Ferry

Just left Chester. Being bussed from Hooton to Hamilton Square due to derailment at Rock Ferry. Was on Twitter early this morning. Says likely to be sorted by 14:00.

Correction... We all got off at Hooton (wondered why other people getting on when we'd been told it was terminating), went over bridge to exit, where bus driver told us to go back as train now going to Rock Ferry. Wish they'd told the train driver!

Found this on Twitter earlier, think the user seems to think the train in the station has derailed... to me looking on my phone it's the train in the background going round the corner...

All the onboard announcements said it was due to a derailment, and as we passed through Rock Ferry (can't remember if I saw it from the rail replacement bus that took us to Hamilton Square, or the train as we pulled into R/F station) there appeared to be a train stuck on the line (or off the line, as the case may have been!).

We got there in the end, only about an hour late. Just another adventure in the everyday life of a rail traveller . Quite interesting to see Green Lane from above, as the station is deep in a cutting and seems to be the most depressing place on earth!

Looks as if on NRE that the line has now reopened - it now says "Following the derailment of an empty passenger train caused by vandalism, trains via Rock Ferry have been disrupted."

Could this of been an object placed on the track, or other means ?

First reports described it as "an incident" so I expect there might have been some artificial cause for the derailment. I hope the yobs (I'm assuming here, but bet I'm right) are getting a kick out of having inconvenienced hundreds of people today .

Twitter now saying the derailment was due to vandalism.

10 MPH in and out of the bays at Rock ferry, so the object must have been sizeable.

Sometimes you wonder if these mindless morons hope to cause more than what you have said, as they seem to be bereft of any type of humanity.

Ballast had been put in the points and the signaller had trouble moving them correctly...

There is a suggestion the ballast was placed in the points, but it's fair to say that the ballast may have got there of it's own accord. Merseyrail's own trains could have caused it if a 3rd rail shoe had belted some ballast into the infrequently used points.

That was what Scenes of Crime Officers reported, and also the driver spaded the signal and shouldn't have been going over the points at the time.
