Derailment at Fratton Depot

Looks like SWR are cancelling the same trains as yesterday, any idea why all the 10 and 12 car services aren’t being split down to provide more services?

Looking at Real Time Trains, there don't appear to have been as many SWR cancellations on Friday 6th as on Thursday 5th but there are some Southern cancellations showing at Portsmouth & Southsea on the Friday, some of them saying due to a problem at the depot (I didn't think Southern used Fratton depot, but maybe some Southern EMUs are stabled there overnight?) and on Saturday 7th some SWR trains are shown as cancelled "due to an issue with the train crew".

The BBC is reporting that SWR ran a reduced service on the Saturday on the Portsmouth and Weymouth lines and cancelled all trains between Reading and Salisbury because of staff Covid absences and the impact of the Fratton derailment. This meant that Overton, Whitchurch and Grateley stations had no service. Exeter-Waterloo trains are also showing on Real Time Trains as not running east of Basingstoke.

I am guessing that unit 444 008 could be out of service for a while.

I thought rolling stock depots had two ways in/out for just such emergencies. Is Fratton an exception?

I imagine there are a good few, depending on how you define it. New, Blackburn. Older, Soho, Birmingham. At least.

Salisbury and Northam, although both have associated sidings that are not reliant on the depot entrance nearby

EDIT: Also Grosvenor Shed, Victoria (possibly stretching the definition of 'depot'), and Stewart's Lane, depending on whether you consider the double track as 'one' way in and out.

Perhaps Hammersmith Depot on the H&C? Athough trains can be routed directly into Hammersmith Station, or via the headshunt to the running lines, both routes traverse a common diamond crossing.

ISTR that London Road Depot (Bakerloo) (storage sidings) only has one way in/out, although that is twin tunnels. Ditto Waterloo Depot on W&C. Northumberland Park on Victoria Line? (might be bi-directional running on the depot lines).

Hmm, it's got exits to the mains and Windsors. You'd be hard pressed to knock out the entire depot in one go with an incident like this.

Exeter trains did additional stops at Whitchurch, Overton and Grateley.

Would you count Blackburn as a depot? It’s more of a stabling point. Soho is a good call.

The brand new Feltham stabling depot has up and down connections to a long reception road, but there’s only one connection into the actual depot sidings, via the wash plant.

Just guessing, but if SWR were stabling trains at Portsmouth/Southsea, then that would reduce capacity for other trains

Neville Hill is a very big depot with only one way in/out IIRC.

Norwich Crown Point, 23 of the 25 roads of the depot (including all shed roads and fuel pads) pass through a single set of points.

Stourbridge? You can access what was the yard from both ends but Chiltern's stabling roads are only reachable from the north. Only little though. And whilst we're in the area the 139 "depot" at the top of Platform 1?

U.444008 was moved from Fratton Depot to Northam Depot on Monday 09 Aug as 5Z26 13+41 for repairs to derailment damage.

Makes a change from the usual unadvertised replacement bus service which passengers tend to ignore as they take so long

Littlehampton has room to berth up to 76 carriages in the depot (another 38 in the station itself), although only about 75% of that space is used. There are 1.5 exits from the depot to the station, both southbound into the (terminus) station, where stock has to change direction to reach the outside world. A deraillment or points failure between depot and station is bad news, problems in the early morning between the station and the top of the branchline are even more challenging for control to work round!

Similarly Bognor station and stabling is at the bottom of a very short branchline spur off the mainline and can easily be cut off from the rest of the world. Actually, I suspect Bognor town has been cut off from the real world for several decades, but that is going off topic.
