Hearing of a derailment in the Coatbridge area involving what looks to be a 318+320 on 5V05 from Yoker to Shields, unsure of the exact location

Looking at Traksy, looks like it's at Sunnyside Junction.
ScotRail reporting line blocked:
Because of an operational incident between Airdrie and Bellgrove all lines are closed. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Yeah just seen that it is at Sunnyside junction with 5V05 being formed of 320309 and 318265

‘First coach appeared to travel over points. The second coach then appeared to fall off rails as it moved over points. 5 coaches look to have derailed and are leaning at a 30 degree angle’

Doubt that will be cleared overnight

Here's an image doing the rounds on the socials. Hopefully everyone involved is okay.

If that’s an ECS to Shields, it would be routed towards Whifflet and apparently came off on the crossover. Comments elsewhere indicate that ScotRail drivers no longer sign that way and are presumably being conducted.

Yoker drivers are conducted between sunnyside junction and whiffle basin by either GBRF or freightliner.

This is due to end when the argyle line reopens.

There was, some years ago now, an evening ECS from Yoker to Shields booked via the Whifflet/Sunnyside line, to maintain route knowledge. Half the time however it had to divert via the Argyle Line, due to..... lack of route knowledge.

Contrary to what was first reported. 2 coaches are off. Rear of the 320 and front of the 318, the rest are still on the rails.

Is there some technology that would make those driving the train aware that they've derailed in a situation like this, or would it just be a sudden increase in resistance?

Is there a reason for the evasiveness implicit in the current practice of projecting the term "operational incident" to explain the ensuing disruption to services? The actuality that a train has "become derailed" will be easily discovered from media reports etc. so would "the railways" not be better to tell it as it is rather than using obfuscating terminology?

Are we allowed to speculate as to what has probably happened? Is it as simple as the points at Sunnyside Junction partly opening or moving after the leading vehicle has passed over them?

Presume this was the working that ground to a halt (as @scotrail170407 advised/mentioned yesterday) ...

Can see that taking at least a day or two to sort out, as far as rerailing and removing the train is concerned at least. Glad all involved walked away from this unhurt, if a bit shaken up!

Beyond a shadow of a doubt. Every train that was due to call/pass through Blairhill in both directions after it last night ended up being cancelled due to - quoting RTT - a points failure.

Somewhat related to this, when was the Argyle Line blockade through Glasgow City Centre (in other words between Partick and Rutherglen) meant to wrap up? Probably just as well this didn't happen back in March!

Services should resume on the Argyle Line (through Central Low Level) on Monday I believe.

It saves having hundreds of different explanations, then everyone moaning that 'they' used the wrong one.

Cheers, knew it was fairly imminent.
The junction had only been in use during the current Argyle Line closure. To transfer units for maintenance.
So probably will be found to be not fit for purpose. Luckily the Argyle Line should open after the weekend.

Yeah, I figured that was the case. I just couldn't remember when the Finnieston-Rutherglen section was due to reopen is all.

This is not the only time it's been used as a diversionary route, as from December 1994 to October 1995* when part of the aforementioned section of the Argyle Line was flooded after the River Kelvin's banks were overwhelmed, with two 314s (208 & 212) getting caught in the deluge at Central Low Level.

*: info sourced from this Hydrological Data UK PDF file for 1994. Page 42 is the relevent one; see if you can spot the error with the line's name lol

Although not in regular use, it was still available and as such, would receive full regular maintenance and inspection.

It looks like the derailment took place around the third and fourth cars from that.

It is the third and fourth that are off. The rear of the third most dramatically so.

Took a wander past to see progress. Work to stabilise ongoing (much less tilt than this morning). I did spot this interesting piece of kit leaving the Coatbridge Sunnyside car park.

It's got to be inspected since one part is on the main North Electric line. It's the turnout to Whiffket that appears to be the problem.

since the coaches that derailed (3 & 4) hadn't even got to the turnout onto the branch yet I think not.

The portion of the train that is stopped over the turnout to Whifflet (131 points according to Traksy) is still on the rails. It is further back over the crossover (137 points) that has derailed.

In any case, the line and points would have been maintained and inspected. Even if the line had been mothballed due to lack of use it would have been inspected prior to being used as a diversionary route due to the Argyll closures.

Information output about the disruption has now been changed from "operational incident" to "a derailed train".

The Sunnyside Junction to Whifflet link has not been mothballed, it is just only occasionally used and usually for infrastructure trains.
There are a couple of daily Q paths and I distinctly recall Caledonian Sleeper using it during the past few months as a diversion - I just can't remember exactly when it was or what it was to avoid.
