Still no services today, I think this mornings 0600 carnoustie to dundee ran but not sure what's happening with the sleeper or the freight as well?
Sleeper passengers were sent via Perth for onward buses for stations between Dundee and Aberdeen inclusive. Although the 0600 Perth-Inverurie did run as far as Dundee, so presumably that was an option for some.Still no services today, I think this mornings 0600 carnoustie to dundee ran but not sure what's happening with the sleeper or the freight as well?
I may be mistaken, but from the look of those photos, the bridge in the background is the site where there was big flooding about a month ago bringing many services to a stop. Perhaps there is a link between the water that builds up in that area and the structural integrity of the tracks? May be far fetched though.
British Transport Police have said they have uncovered evidence that a train that came off the track near Inverkeilor in Angus may have been deliberately derailed.
Officers searching the scene of the incident have discovered an obstruction, which they believe was placed there deliberately.
I'm horrified at this. If this is a deliberate act (which it now seems it is) the person or persons are mindless fools. This could have been much worse than it was all for "a bit of a laugh"
What a sick world we live in!
I found some pictures of it, not mine

As others have said, it is rather lucky that nothing was on the up line at the time.
Never known of an XC service take the form of a 2xxx reporting code before!
With regards to the posters asking about an 8 car Voyager - if there is substantial damage to the leading car, would it be possible to use the VT "hot-standby" cars (well, car) from 221 144?
(Oh wait, the last time I heard of them starting that two car unit up, the cab filled with smoke...maybe not then!!!)
Mindless fools could easily have become mass murderers.
Let's hope their caught and soon.

I agree. This incident could have been ten times worse. Very pleased to hear that no one was seriously injured.
Indeed so. I believe the headcode was 2A40. This does happen quite a bit: for towns which only have one or two CrossCountry services a day, such as Aberdeen, Penzance and Guildford, a unit will form a service with a 2xxx headcode running from the nearest depot in the nearest larger city to that town, before working a long-distance service (in this case I believe 221131 was going to form 1V66 1112 Aberdeen to Plymouth). The same can be said for the other direction. There's an evening 2C80 2208 Penzance to Plymouth service, which is formed off either 1V58 (0900 Glasgow to Penzance) or 1V60 (0820 Aberdeen to Penzance).
As for 221144, this is a Virgin unit. Would CrossCountry be able to hire it or not? I have no idea on that one.

On 4 November 2012 at approximately 10:00 hrs, the front bogie of the leading vehicle of the 08:04 hrs CrossCountry Trains service from Edinburgh to Aberdeen derailed in the vicinity of Inverkeilor in Scotland.
RAIB deployed inspectors to site to carry out a preliminary examination of the circumstances.
Having evaluated the evidence from site, the RAIB has concluded that it will not be leading the investigation into the cause of the derailment. Since an obstruction found at the scene is believed to have been placed there deliberately, the RAIB has agreed that the British Transport Police should conduct the ongoing investigation. As is normal in such cases, the evidence obtained by the RAIB during its site activities is to be shared with the BTP.
