Derailed train between Arbroath/Montrose

It says on NRE that trains have been suspended between Dundee and Aberdeen due to a derailed train.

A train has become derailed between Arbroath and Montrose.
Because of this, the following alterations will apply until futher notice:

• Buses are replacing trains between Dundee and Montrose
• East Coast services between London Kings Cross and Aberdeen will only run between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh. Passengers should use ScotRail services between Edinburgh and Dundee to connect with replacement buses.
• ScotRail services between Edinburgh / Glasgow Queen Street and Aberdeen will only run between Edinburgh / Glasgow Queen Street and Dundee.
• A train shuttle service will run between Montrose and Aberdeen to connect with replacement buses
• The 21:42 ScotRail sleeper service from Aberdeen to London Euston will start from Edinburgh. A replacement bus will run from Aberdeen to Edinburgh.
• Journey times may be extended by up to 60 minutes.

Ticket acceptance

East Coast passengers may use ScotRail services between Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

Has anyone got any info on how bad it is - hopefully it's only minor of course. Does look as if the 08.04 XC from Edinburgh to Aberdeen is involved from looking at the timetables.

Buses are expected to be onsite by 12:30, check before you travel.

Current Status:

Owing to a derailed train between Dundee and Aberdeen:
Impact:
Train services between Edinburgh and Aberdeen may be terminated at Dundee and restarted from Montrose at short notice. An estimate for the resumption of normal services will be provided as soon as the problem has been fully assessed.
Customer Advice:
Please note that replacement transport will operate from Dundee to Aberdeen.
Passengers should note that journey times will be extended and should allow extra time for their journey and any onward connections cannot be guaranteed.

Yes there is a limited bus service

Network Rail's rapid response team are onsite.

There will be a limited rail service between Montrose and Aberdeen, however buses are expected to run direct between Dundee and Aberdeen.

Statement from XC -

The 0804 CrossCountry service from Edinburgh to Aberdeen was involved in an incident at Inverkeilor, between Arbroath and Montrose, at 0945 this morning.

The front wheels of the train became derailed but the train remained upright. There are 36 passengers and two crew members on board. There are no reports of any injuries.

Emergency services are attending the site along with rail personnel. Arrangements are being made to take passengers from the train and on to their destinations.

Rail services are currently suspended in the area and replacement road transport is being arranged.

A full investigation will be undertaken to determine the cause of the incident.

and this is indeed the case. Station staff at EDB doing a smashing job, customers with Pre-dated tickets being offered the option of going tomorrow. glad the driver was not badly injured, with the Beeb wouldnt be so sensationall.

RAIB have been called to the site to launch an investigation.

Update from Scotrail is that services will not resume today, no decision has been made if services can be restored for tomorrow as yet..

Advice from Scotrail is that buses are limited in availability particularly Southbound and alternative travel arrangements should be considered where possible.

As stated, no news yet on tonights sleeper. I just wonder if the option exists right now to send the 21:42 Aberdeen - Euston sleeper stock ECS this afternoon via Inverness and then Perth, and start the service at Dundee, with passengers using a shuttle train service leaving earlier from Aberdeen?

Tayside Police have taped off a section of track near the signal box, according to reports on their Facebook page.

Sleeper is starting from EDB.

there are some bits of track round there that are very rough riding and have been noticing it quite a bit lately as Iv been going up and down

I wondered how far it had traveled whilst derailed.
Looking at the track at the rear of the train I can see very little damage.
When I saw the results of the Copmanthorpe derailment a few years back every sleeper for about 1/2 a mile was broken

I too noticed that.

Perhaps the derailment occurred when the train was in advanced stages of emergency brake action because the driver saw an object on the track, but the sightlines aren't brilliant, from what I can see, so I'm guessing the speed would have to have been relatively low.

An alternative theory is that an object/animal became trapped in the mechanism of the front bogie, jamming it so that it could not rotate freely and therefore pushing it over the rails.

That's all pure speculation, though!

Yes i thought exactly the same, i think everyone involved can be rather thankfull, that had the potential to be a disaster.

Was quite shocking to see it derailed towards the 'up' & thank goodness nothing was approaching as appears to be on a curve to. All those rule book eventualities come quickly to mind.

XC restarted 11.12 Abd-Ply from Waverley rt time.

Well the train is still there now, so will be a late night for all involved.

Even if they do get it re-railed and moved tonight the track will still need inspecting at the very least.

We won't be seeing an 8 car Voyager any time soon either .

I may be mistaken, but from the look of those photos, the bridge in the background is the site where there was big flooding about a month ago bringing many services to a stop. Perhaps there is a link between the water that builds up in that area and the structural integrity of the tracks? May be far fetched though.

It is alleged to be an act of vandalism. Police are involved.

Must say that was my first thought when I saw only the leading bogie had derailed.
