It was probably a Pacer!

Having said that I wouldn't call delays of up to 45 minutes on Northern Rail services "havoc." Last winter was "havoc!"

Thanks for that. Not sure how long the disruption will be going on for.
I don't think that GC or EC are having any problems at the moment.

I notice east coast have stopped a train additionally at Morpeth, so I suspect that is to assist with the missing unit. Could an XC stop at Cramlington?

Anybody have any pictures of the vehicle that would be used to rescue a derailed train such as this? How long does the process take on average and is it a ball ache of a job to do?

Search for BRUFF wagons. These are road rail vehicles that carry all the necessary jacks etc for rerailing errant vehicles.

Most, if not all, of the existing BRUFF's are operated by DB Schenker and are dotted around the country (if not replaced by Volvo SRS vehicles, BRUFF still crops up in control logs now and again, I don't know if this has turned into a generic term). There are still a few breakdown trains knocking about, presumably crewed when needed by the same DBS breakdown gangs.

Of course if Gateshead Shed hadn't been done away with they could have serviced them there.

Went past Heaton depot earlier on and noticed the offending Northern Rail Sprinter unit straddled across points at the far north end. Looked like it had been entering the depot area from the north at relatively low speed, started to cross points and then one bogie set went on the ahead path, and the other on the divert! Looked very strange indeed...

Anyone got any further news on this? Damage etc?

I was told by a friend from Heaton that it was actually re-railed by an (EWS?) gang who turned up in a van and jacked it back on in the end.

I think it has just become a generic term now

Knottingley....crane and support vehicles returned today as 2Z99

Can you confirm as to whether the crane was used or not to re-rail the unit?

I've seen probably half a dozen derailments and have yet to see the use of a crane. It's always been done by an EWS gang with jacks.
