Derailed freight at Newcastle

Train services at Newcastle are being disrupted due to a derailed freight train

GNER trains will operate between Newcastle and Scotland and between London Kings Cross and Darlington. Replacement road transport is in operation between Newcastle and Darlington

Northern Rail, Transpennine Express and Virgin Trains services are subject to alterations and delays

It is expected a normal train service will resume within 3-4 hours

Just had a few things in my email inbox about this. Several services have been cancelled or altered as Tom has said with turnarounds at Darlington and Newcastle.

The incident is on the King Edward bridge (probably the worst place) and apparently a wagon is on it's side so it could be pretty awkward to clear if true.

Well, as I cycled in to work on the north bank of the Tyne today, there was nothing to be seen looking up at the bridge.... Tyne Valley trains seem to be passing OK, although MetroCentre shorts are mostly cancelled.... so, perhaps the derailment is on the South side, before the bridge, mainly stopping the ECML?

Just had another mail about this. Seems as though the derailment is above Pottery Lane near Forth Banks so I think that would be the approach to the bridge. A wagon has been spotted perched on it's side but that is about it so far.

So why aren't trains simply operating via the High Level Bridge?

OK, it would mean everything would get turned (first class would be at the wrong end of GNER's trains).

And platforms 9,10,11 and 12 can't be reached.

Did I read somewhere that there's a weight restriction on the HLB preventing long/heavy trains from using it?

Looks like the points are damaged.

Nothing to stop trains using the High Level bridge otherwise.

Loco involved is 66237 on 6S22 Drax-Thornton empty coal

Loco and first 21 wagons are fine and still on the rails. Loco is stopped adjacent to the Provincial sidings.

22nd wagon is 352421, and is upright, but off the rails and severely damaged, with the appearance of having been dragged on its side.

23rd wagon is on it's side, and beleived to be 359003

24th wagon is upright but derailed, and is confirmed as 355082.

The rest of the train stands behind, with the last wagon around half way over the KE Bridge

There is 'significant' damage to track and pointwork...

Update from North East Gen at 14:06:

Down Fast over KEB reopened 14:00 with emergency signalling; 1S13 11:00 KX-GLC running through. Limited service resuming

I would have thought they would have just used the high level for regional services as GNER have used the plan of terminating trains at Newcastle & Darlington on many weekends in the past. I can imagine it would be absolute gridlock if everything was being diverted over the high level and they would be backed up for miles.

Last 2 wagons 350003+355082 now upright. Full line block from 23:00. Heavy damage 2 track frm signal T645 over KEB

The High Level Bridge is restricted at the moment due to the work going on which is why it couldnt be used more today.

by the term of old i guess you meen built. i think this could be anytime from the late 1960s to the late 1970's/early 80s
