Derailed 'Engineering train' at Barnetby

As the title says really. National rail enquires saying this may go on until 1400.

An engineering train has derailed between Barnetby and Scunthorpe which means that trains are unable to run between these stations.

This means that buses are replacing train services between these stations which is extending journey times by up to 45 minutes.

There is no firm estimate yet of how long disruption will last but it is likely to continue until at least 14:00.

Alternative routes where tickets will be accepted

Passengers may use services between Scunthorpe and Manchester Piccadilly run by East Midlands and Northern Rail

The sole replacenent bus to Cleethorpes is over 45mins late.
All I know is an ''Engineering Train'' derailed between Scunthorpe and Barnetby and it is going to last til 20:00. So it's no Hatfield with 6months of chaos.

I believe it was a road rail vehicle that managed to fall down a bank partially blocking the line.

Why do you think that? I haven't seen any info saying it was a ''Hy-Rail'' vehicle or the New Measurement Train or anything else.

A post on Lincoln Rail Gen this afternoon,

A road rail vehicle has fell down an embankment between Elsham & Appleby, delaying the T3 possession being given up (which runs from Barnetby & also includes Brigg & Holton-le-Moor). No idea when it is expected to be cleared, but the Market Rasen line is looking to be opened for possible diversions

Not seen any pictures, but a source of mine at NR mentioned the OTP was drilling holes - seemingly hitting something solid before the boom recoiled and derailed the OTP. AIUI the OTP was cleared off the track by shoving it down an embankment, to be recovered at a later date. I am led to believe this happened in the vicinity of Worlaby.

According to Grimsby Telegraph trains are back to normal.
I can't help but think how many derailments have happened on this line in recent years.

Wonder how close it was to Barnetby? Did TPE keep up their route knowledge via Brigg and Retford LL?

Unlikely that they would have kept it, but even if they did, the Brigg line is normally closed on Sundays, so wouldn't have been any help.

The route was opened up for the passage of freight traffic yesterday until recovery was completed. TPE terminating/starting at Scunthorpe.

No it wasn't. The Market Rasen line was opened (one of the three boxes was open for a possession, anyway), but in the end, nothing was diverted, with Single Line Working being put in place between Wrawby Junction & Scunthorpe (Foreign Ore Branch Junction) to get a handful of freight through. Diversion opportunities were very limited anyway, as the GN/GE Joint Line had a possession between Bessacarr Junction & Gainsborough Trent Junction on through to this morning, so the only other alternative would be via Worksop & Maltby.

The issue of the opening times of the signal boxs on the Brigg Line is an ongoing issue between Northern Rail and Not-Work Rail.

Northern did want to run Bank Holiday Monday services to and from Cleethorpes but the box's are shut from 7am until 1pm, they are also trying to get a morning and evening peak service to run to/from Gainsborough Central.

Since Hatfield you would have thought that for mainly freight reasons the Brigg Line would have better opening times.

Presumably Hatfield meant the signallers on the Brigg line were brought in on overtime rather than as part of the roster which would it would need to be if the Brigg Line opened 24hrs on a daily basis, with all the extra signallers needed to go with it.

I doubt it will be open 24hrs/day until the line goes into either a PSB / IECC or ROC.

At the time of Hatfield, the Brigg line boxes were open from 06:00 Monday to 22:00 Saturday. The only extra shifts needing to be covered were Saturday nights and Sunday day & night, which were worked on with an amended roster for the resident signallers. It's since Hatfield was reopened that the 06:00 to 14:00 shift Monday to Friday was knocked on the head, but to be fair, the morning shift Monday to Friday was never originally planned to be part of the upgrade back in 2008. Rules Of The Route stated that 06:00 to 14:00 Monday to Friday would be reserved for engineering work, and no traffic was to be booked unless diversions were needed, so basically they are now simply closing the signal boxes when they're not needed.
