Many moons ago when I was about five years old, I remember watching part of this documentary series with my father, as I was already interested in trains at a young age. As far as I'm aware, Derail was only ever shown once on British television, probably as it was broadcast shortly before Hatfield and Great Heck. For years I've been looking for the episodes with zero success, which wasn't hugely surprising given how empty the IMDB page for Derail is. I assumed the series was lost media and gave up the search for a while.
A couple of days ago a video titled Why Trains Crash: Complete TV Series (2000) appeared in my YouTube recommended list and having quickly skipped through, I've ascertained that this actually is the mythical Derail miniseries from 2000, based on three points:
1. The title card at 46:35 literally says Derail
2. The credits at 2:23:15 give copyright to Channel 4 for the year 2000
3. The last part of the video deals with the horrific 1995 Fox River Grove level crossing collision in Illinois, which I distinctly recall being upset about when I saw the episode with my father back in 2000
The documentary is very much of its time and is somewhat outdated, but is still a good watch if you have a couple of hours spare.
