How does it sound like a dodgy working practice when I have not even mentioned anything about the procedure involved?

This task relys entirely on the MDDs concentration, memory, ability to listen to knackered radio equipment, and judgement skill.

Even if you SPAD the chances are TPWS will stop you safely.
The other stuff that can happen (fire, derailment, etc) is rare as rocking horse s**t, may never happen.
TDK - you mention the amount of signals you pass, there's far more to SOL incidents than signals. All I can say is MDD'ing at my place would be a hell of a lot easier if we had more signals, rather than the current situation where you have to rely on radio communication, planning, concentration & looking out for hazards (points, fouling units, fitters working on or under your train, etc) and memorising everything that is going on at all times that can relate to train movements.

This is ridiculous. Why would you want even MORE signals in a depot. Why take the last thing that stimulates my brain at work from me? I like the fact I have to think about where I'm going, what's in my way, what's coming towards me, what have i got to do next??? You'll be saying they should invent ATO for depot driving next.

I never said I wanted more signals. I said the job would be a lot simpler and easier if we had signals everywhere, but as you said, you wouldn't have to think and it would be dull and boring.

Think he should spend the day with a freight driver then he will realise how huge the gap is in relation to his Job title! Admit it matey our job holds more responsibility, skill,it's why mainline drivers have to do more training than you and it's why most of us get paid a hell of a lot more mate,it just kills you to admit it,for example shunting a bus at 5 mph is a huge skill in your head!! well you may want to to try and position a 2000tonne train on a falling gradient with greasy rails onto a discharge pad!! As for TPWS comments, proves how mental you are,MSc? Are you sure,I wonder if you do have any basic school qualifications at all with the utter trash that comes out of that mouth of yours.

Um, you intimated that vehicles were attached with the possibility of people working in between. If that is not the case then what do you mean by...

Putting split units back together with someone working inbetween vehicles for example - now that's more serious than stopping at stations!

I stated they were split and the MDD in the cab and the MDD on the ground working between have the task of putting them back together.

JAMBO get off your high horse, why is it freight drivers on here get so arrogant and big headed about their "2000 tonne" trains. You clearly have no idea about an MDDs role going off the way you talk about it and I really think its you who needs to spend a night with an MDD as there is clearly FAR more to the role than you think.

We got MDDs at our place who used to drive 3000 tonne freights for BR and they don't go on about how their old job was far more responsible or skilled than what they're doing now!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
The reason for the "far more training" mainline drivers have is mainly due to the amount of 1 in a million situations that could happen!

I know mainline drivers who have never - not even once - had to use about 50%+ of the stuff that they learned in the classroom.

Nothing worse than a driver who thinks he is better than another because of traction .

Brainwashed into thinking your great

Well said
It seems the bigger the train the more arrogant some Drivers get on here.

Sorry catching the tail end of this part of the debate... but isn't that a bit hypocritical? Im sure on several occasions you've put "amount of traction" signed as a pro point to being an MDD. Suddenly it's the other way around.

Lol! I really couldn't care less about the size of a train matey but when some depot shunter or whatever you are called this week claims he has the most important job on the railway then it gets rather boring to everyone, now reading another thread where you are talking the same rubbish you never seize to amaze me as you are now comparing your position to a doctor, politician and whatever else!! And that a doctor isn't worth 3 times your salary. Are you for real???? It's time to get down from that cloud in the sky that you seem to live on and have a reality check, fantasy land. You are just a depot shunter, that's it,simples, and you are Deffo no doctor matey!
